The ribbon cable is a ultra-fine cable that is flexible enough to unroll when a slide is extended and roll up when the slide is retracted. The cable provides power and control signals to the upper part of the phone (keys, display, etc.). In my opinion this is the weakness of the slider form factor. Beautiful piece of hardware!
