Is The Nexus One “Google Phone” Too Expensive?

December 29, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 12 Comments

Gizmodo was able to get there hands on an internal document outlining the pricing for the Google Phone Nexus One.  With a two-year T-Mobile contract the device cost $180.  For the unlocked unsubsidized verision, you’ll have to shell out $530.  Is this too expensive?

No. I paid $500 for both my iPhone 3G and 3Gs because they were “early upgrades”. And those are LOCKED to AT&T. While it may be too pricy to become a huge hit, it’s price is reasonable for why you get considing it’s unlocked.

The pricing is on par with Nokia. I was hoping to see Google offer a direct purchase model where you got push advertisement for a period of time or number of ads at which point you have subsided the phone and ads would stop. Wishful thinking I know. For the US Market it is extremely high as we are not use to buying unlocked phones. I have purchased many unlocked phones in my past but like many of your users we are not average. Most people want the nicest phone at the cheapest price.

That is a bit steep for my coffers. Now, maybe if it were a Netbook running Chrome OS….

It’s on par. Question is, how good is it? If it’s good, the cost becomes easier to digest. TMO is a questionable way to go, but if it has UMA, I’d personally give it a whirl. UMA is key when it comes to TMO.

Google & HTC both make enough money that 530 is not worth it to the average consumer. With the iPhone the price was justified by the cost of an iPod one of the most popular electronic gadgets of the decade. And with google making the only deal with their phone exclusive to T-Mobile (one of the worst providers in the nation) — I think that they have their head too far up their asses to see what people actually want. Think about it, get a phone or get a brand new laptop in that price range?

Problem isn’t the price, but the network you have to use it on. TMO is the worst of the big 4 in terms of coverage and speed.

TMO may soon have some of the fastest network speeds… possibly faster than some G4 networks.

I’ll believe that when I see it.

Way too expensive for my packet. We are talking about the “phone” which is priced at $529, what does it do that is worth that kind of money? Nah, being as cheap as I am, I will be buying this phone when no one wants it.

Yeah, it’s not cheap, but it is right in line with other smart phones for price. Even a HTC G1 unlocked on Amazon is $500.00 (http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Unlocked-Phone-Google-White/dp/B0032YAMKO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262789519&sr=1-1)

View the slow sales of Nexus 1 (20,000 the first week), I don’t give it long for the price to drop

Way too expensive. It’s amazing that Google is so good at things, but is the worst retailer. They can’t design and sell anything tangible. They better stick to software and search algorithms.
