If The iPhone Is So Great, Why Do All The Celebrities Use BlackBerrys?

June 16, 2008 by Robb Dunewood 28 Comments

I know that this isn’t exactly a fair question to ask on a site dedicated to BlackBerrys, however, it is starting off to be a pretty slow news week and I really want to hear your opinions.

Just to be clear, I am not saying that no famous people use iPhones. It just seems that in a world where pictures of celebrities using BlackBerrys seem to be ridiculously plentiful, pictures of famous folks using iPhones seem hard to come by.

Why is that, I wonder?

I suspect because RIM decided that it would be good publicty and gave them away and that Apple feel that they don’t need the publicity.

As a BB user, I risk shooting myself in the foot with this response, but I think it’s because the BB is idiot-proof. šŸ˜‰ I’m being a little tongue-in-cheek here.

Your average celebrity–and senior management type–have assistants who take care of the more challenging aspects of BB usage: configuring and programing and installing… etc. After that, using the BB is as simple as pushing a couple of buttons.

We have managers in our office who are technophobes, but live and die by their BBs. I.T. sets up the device, their assistants look after day-to-day maintenance and the manager answers mail and makes calls without breaking a sweat.

Are you serious? It’s because BB gives them away at every awards show. And also, funny, with the number of different BB models out there…The above picture shows them with the exact same BB.

As you note as well, I think all of these celebs own iPhones as well.

I think part of the answer is simple: celebs like to email and text message a whole lot, and right now the BB is still king in that category.

A few of the senior managers at my company recently switched from BB to iPhone and I think they’re all about ready to switch back. Essentially they miss their BB keyboards and haven’t gotten used to the touch keyboard.

Could it be as simple as that? If texting and email are the primary functions after voice, then BB is a clear winner.

I couldn’t care less what device a celebrity carries. Especially that group of idiots you have posted.

Does an iPhone let an assistant add/remove items to your calendar wirelessly?

yes… why yes it does! All you have to do have some kind of account that lets you access your calendar items from different place (example: i’ve got google calendar) and give the assistant access to the calendar. The assistant could be in another state, or even country, and still manage their boss’s schedule!

    hotbari,

As far as I know, RIM doesn’t hand out BlackBerrys at award shows. They do give out phones, but it’s rare that they ever give BlackBerrys (unless it’s a BlackBerry-hosted event).
Also, the reason they all have the same phone (in the photo up top) is because they all got it customized at the Coachella after party — hence the reason they all have the same star-lasered back covers.

I think celebrities seldom use iPhones because they’re laughed at enough for being idiots who prance around without a job (Paris Hilton). And since the iPhone isn’t known as a business phone and more so as a multimedia/fun&games phone, the celebrities stay away from them.
Instead, they get a more “corporate” device to show that they’re serious people with real careers that require lots of scheduling.

Yes, I agree that the iPhone simply isn’t “there” as far as e-mail/texting goes – partly due to the lack of Exchange support (at least, until July 11), partly due to the soft keyboard. Perhaps the tide will shift in the future, but for now, the BB is a better two-way communication device than the iPhone.

I have to rib Robb a little bit and say that lately, the phrase “the lady doth protest too much” seems to aptly describe RIMarkable vis-a-vis the iPhone. šŸ˜‰

I’m not sure if the fact that a celebrity uses something should be used as an argument for or against the iPhone — but I am sure celebs get these phones for free, and probably get their voice/data plans for free too. It’s great marketing. I know for a fact that T-Mobile does this. I can only assume the others do too. Also, the iPhone sucks. Holla!

It’s because most celebrities can’t figure out which way up to hold an iphone

I personally adore my iPhone over my BB. I find my BB to be incredibly non-user-friendly and a pain in the butt to customize (It’s always upset me that BB has such horrible support for Macs — especially nowadays). The only thing that keeps me with my BB is because it’s the most reliable phone I have when it comes to service and email. Obviously, the BB trumps the iPhone for that simple reason alone — the iPhone is a pain when it comes to first setting up emails because you have to find a server and switch it back and forth depending on where you are or if you’re in EDGE or Wifi. All it would take is for Apple to come out with their own, reliable, outgoing mail server though and the problem would be solved. As soon as they do that I’ll probably get rid of my BB.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my BB. I have just had so many annoying problems with both BB’s that I have owned (I currently have a Curve) that I have a love / hate relationship with BB. And once I can install applications on my iPhone… The iPhone is only going to get better and better and I can’t wait for that.

Plus, celebrities don’t know crap so that’s kind of a moot point. :-p

Love my iPhone; email is easy as sin with it. What I want to know is why the hell would anyone own more than 1 cellphone? Like the person above who uses their iPhone as an iPod. So you PAY 90 bucks a month to have an iPod? WTF…go buy a Touch.

I guess that’s cause celebs like emailing each other “quickly” with an “easy to type” keyboard. ‘THE MAIN USE OF A BLACKBERRY IS TO EMAIL!!!! I think it’s designed for business people who ‘actually’ receive loads of emails. I have no idea why celebs use it.
    And also,
There’s a thing called “blackberry messenger’. It’s very private, very fast, very ‘free!’ (no charge) and can ONLY be used my blackberry users. REALLY FAST! better than MSN messenger
Although the iphone is very stylish, it may be slow at times.
It’s main use is for Music with it’s excellent touchscreen and vibrant color screen.!
    BOTH are great!!!
And maybe celebrities prefer the Blackberry, is because it has NEWER models EVERY YEAR,… while the iphone remains it’s old 2005 designed greatness :)!

thats be honest here the iphone is great phone but as for texting emailing quick it sucks ass, celeberties got all the money in the world they do not need a free phone so if they really didnt like the blackberry they would just buy a iphone common sense here guys, they have enough money to buy 100 iphones for there friends and family, i think iphones are more better for woman and kids because they are easy to use, they play great video games they have neet apps but i find myself not really using all those apps apple has i use it for more video games playing. i returned my iphone 3gs cause i just out grew it i mean iam at a age in my life where i dint find myself playing iphone video games.blackberry is my favorite phone of choice, it is easy to email twiiter, text , its just is to type period, i hated to bang my fingers on glass just to text a message it gets weird after awhile, blackberry is just more better in my opion and alot others, dont get me wrong iphone is a great phone but you got to ask yourself what u want out of a cell phone, if it is video games video recording and etc.. than iphone is all you, but if you are into texting emails, twitter, facebook alot of typing then blackberry wins hands down, i think celeberties did play around with the iphone , but liked blackberries instead, now think about if you were making millions of dollars already it dosent matter how many free phone you have cause you going to use the phone u like no need for free phones on a celeberty salary.

It’s all a trend. I remember when the iphone first came out half of the people in my university had it. Now that the BB is popular these people dont walk around with their iphones anymore and strut around with their BBs txting eachother. It’s stupid..it’s more of a business phone as some of you have mentioned and university students arent exactly working lol. My friend has an iphone and a BB and she uses her iphone as an ipod in her car. She just leaves it in her purse and uses her BB to call and txt…i think it’s sad.
I have an iphone and i think its great šŸ™‚

They have blackberrys because they can be more easily secured than iPhones. Its also why more businesses and department of defense contractors all have to use blackberrys and not iPhones. Celebrities don’t want anyone breaking in their phones and reading their messages

Most celebrities have left Blackberry for the iPhone. Blackberry fails to compare to any phone in theĀ competitiveĀ market. We’re all still waiting for the Blackberry to be able to do anything other than freeze. Anyone who does use BB are usually the type of people who don’t look for much out of their phone. All they want is a phone that’s easy to use and a qwerty keyboard. As for celebrities, since the iPhone 4 has debuted, nearly anyone worth knowing has swapped to the iPhone.Ā

Personally, I love iPhone and Blackberry. But I’m DEFINITELY leaving my BB 9930 in the dust for the iPhone 4s.Ā
