How Long Will It Take Verizon To Release The BlackBerry Curve?

by Robb Dunewood on May 6, 2007 · 1,293 comments

Update 2:  The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Ships Friday, May 9th.

Update: The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Has Been Officially Announced!

Now that Verizon has officially announced that the BlackBerry 8830 will be available just a few months after the release of the BlackBerry 8800 on Cingular, we know that they can get things done without taking the better part of a year. The BlackBerry 8830, however, is a business device and business BlackBerry users live in Verizon’s wheel house.

The big question for me is how long will it take for Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve? Might the Verizon CDMA BlackBerry Curve follow just a few months behind the GSM version or will the company with the nation’s best network revert back to their usual year long lag behind?

Research in Motion announced the BlackBerry Curve differently than they have devices to come before it. The Curve was announced carrier unbranded. We can only assume that RIM didn’t offer a period of exclusivity to any one carrier opting possibly for a bigger payday by allowing all carriers to come out with the BlackBerry Curve relatively around the same time.

If this is the case the only thing really holding Verizon back is the porting the BlackBerry Curve over from GSM to CDMA, a task that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis says can be done quickly, so, I ask the question again. How long will it take Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve?

G – Thanks for the info.

Josh – I just checked my tracking number and it says as of 7:15 this morning it is at the destination at the sorting facility in my building in chicago. It is my guess I will have it in the next several hours. I will keep you posted though.

Is there anything more lonely than seeing the “out for delivery” message on the Fed Ex tracking system and glancing out the window every few minutes waiting for that little bundle of joy to be delivered?

I just ordered my Curve and I would like to say it has been fun coming back on this board all this time and reading the post.

Also I would like to say, I tried ordering it through the regular 1-800… customer service channels but I had no luck after calling 5 times yestreday. I only had luch after I called a Sales Rep in NY and I was able to order then. He told me since I worked with a corporation and on the corporate account I could order it but it would not be available to the “public” until Friday. But if I were you I would try to chance it and get some numbers of some Sales Rep.

One sales rep’s # I saw was on the howardforum:

Also you can

Gary
866-745-4679 x9460

Let me know if this work, if not I can give you the guy’s number I talk to in NY this morning, even though he is a sales rep for corporate accounts you can see if he will be able to do something for you.

I hope this helps

So, with great anticipation, I just opened the FedEx box from Verizon…

Um, this is kinda strange to say, since I’ve been following this thread since January… remind me again what the big deal was?

The UI seems so clunky, nothing seems intuitive, the little track ball is not very responsive at all, the keys are just painted on text…
I guess it’s my fault for expecting choirs of angels to start singing or something, but I can’t help but feel ridiculously underwhelmed… perhaps some folks would like to start extolling some virtues here to get me pumped up again?

It’s awesome that its here. I guess they had to force it earlier than expected for various reasons:

1) it already being posted earlier.
2) All the upgrades that were accepted over the past couple of days.
3) To beat out Sprint if they do release tomorrow.

Either way, I’m pretty happy with a nice price of $80.

upgrading my phone or…

buying the phone without a contract and just switching numbers?

NY Curve still waiting
#1148. May 3rd, 2008, at 6:30 PM.

I think everyone that says they actually have the phone or have it being delivered before the release date is full of it. I’m sure some of us would like some HARD CORE proof. Every time I called Verizon they have said . . . “No, we can’t order it, nor are we taking pre-orders”. Interested in how those few of you seem to have gotten “lucky” enough to have someone send out a phone that’s simply not available yet and all well before any officially posted release date. How about someone posts a picture of their new phone . . . with the brand new box that it came in . . . that would be proof enough for me. I doubt we’ll see that either. Looks like May 9th, online orders still.

^^^^
Now I realize the post I quoted above was from a few days ago, but iIcould not resist responding to it.

No one is under any obligation to prove anything to you, if you don’t believe it then you can wait until the 9th or the 12th or whatever to order yours. Lots of people had ordered and/or recieved their curves over the weekend. Try doing some research over at Howard forums where pictures and “proof” were posted over the last several days.

Just because it wasn’t working for you, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Try harder. Look at other sites and see what numbers people were calling, and what reps they were talking to. Then maybe you’d get somewhere. There’s HARD CORE proof in a lot of places, you just have to look for it.

I have been reading these posts for some time now, I really appreciate the updates and educated guesses. I am actually surprised that I didn’t have a melt down for having to wait this long, but this evening I called Verizon (Huntington Beach, CA) and was able to order the Blackberry Curve. I had it shipped overnight. Hope this helps anyone in my area.

Once again, thanks to the board!

So on Tuesday around 2 Pm, the fed ex delivered the little bundle of joy

Um, after following this forum since January, waiting and following every twist and turn for almost 5 months I have to ask…

What was the big deal?

I mean, now that I’m finally really using it, the interface is clunky, the trackball is disappointingly squishy (and I imagine it will only get worse when it gets gunked up like the old fashioned mice always did), the UI is not intuitive or all that great for getting things done… Sure, the keypad is surprisingly good to type on, but the letters are just painted on? jeez, even the free phone that i’m replacing from 4 years ago had light up numbers so it could be used in the dark…

I hate to sound so down, especially since some people for some reason are not able to even order yet… But I need some serious re-flating of expectations! Perhaps I had built it up too much in my head, but this thing feels like maybe something slightly better than most of the competition, not something head and shoulders above the field. What was so great that we all followed this forum so religiously?

Or maybe it’s the 5 freaking hours I had to spend on the phone with Verizon on Monday to finally get my order correct…

Honest feedback…
Whenever I get a new phone frm Verizon they have disabled some of the functionality that I actually bought the phone for. I know about the GPS issue but am wondering what else has been disabled on the phone so that we can PAY Verizon for the same functionality?

Ho hum…
You probably won’t see the benefits as the curve comes out of the box. I previously owned the ATT Curve and am awaiting my Verizon Curve. These past few weeks I have missed my curve. The Curve is actually the sexiest blackberry to date. the pearl is weird on the fingers. Use it for a week and then get back to me. the fact that the letters are painted on are negligible as you won’t keep the phone long enough for the numbers to come off.
in comparison to the ATT curve, the Verizon Curve has more RAM, which means you should be able to run google maps on it without using up all your resources.
Seems as though you never had a blackberry you might want to search the blackberry and crackberry forums in order to feel the love.

PB and Billy,
how did you get your phone so cheap?

I called Monday and was able to pre-order the phone and was told I would be called Friday to complete the order. I was surprised by a call from the same rep yesterday telling me that her supervisor is allowing them to ship now, so I completed my order and will be receiving it today. I also checked the website and the Curve is now on there for ordering.

Thanks to all who have posted for a very entertaining time.

Gotta love Fed Ex! I’m charging mine right now. Billy, it doesn’t look like the keys are backlit. I’m like a kid in a candy store tho! It’s sooooo cool. It came with a wired headset that has two earplugs…so I guess this is the stereo effect? It is so light and small compared to my old Treo and even the 8703 I’ve been using for a month. The color of the phone is sharp looking and classy (San Diego) despite everyone’s cry for black. The edges are rubbery so it won’t get scratched. It’s just impressive in general. Even sliding the back cover off to install the battery exposing the inner workings and camera…it’s just very cool…sorry that’s the best way I can describe it! I’ve been following this forum since early December, so it’s fun to finally be posting receipt of my new Curve! I’m going to go to Crackberry to see what people recommend to download as add ons. G, I love the idea of the html email reader. Please anyone post other “absolute necessities” for add ons. NV here’s actual proof of my charging CURVE!!! http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk112/heathtalbot/

Keys are backlit!!!!!!

Very nice device. Even paired it with my car’s bluetooth. Flawless.

Funny story. I was on with Verizon activating the phone and getting help with e-mail accounts, etc… and they kept telling me that they didn’t know the phone had even been released yet.

HA!!! While they were helping me do all the programming!!! Too funny!

I got mine for the standard price of $319.99. Now I had the “New Every 2″ which means my contract was up and could get a new phone of choice up to $100, so that dropped it to $219.99. I then signed up for a data plan. (since I hadn’t had a blackberry before) This drops is an additional $100 to $119.99. Plus the $50 mail in rebate I’ll have drops it to another $69.99 plus taxes and what not to $80 bones. Good stuff.

Also my buddy that works for verizon said he’ll switch my contacts over for free and hook me up on other small stuff. :)

The world edition came with a “leather” hoster – the curve comes with a phone “pocket” – is this a “holster” without a belt clip?

What’s in the box, guys?

Reply

36 Jesus and Curve Lover May 8, 2008 at 9:21 am

Pitbull- The pocket is the one lame thing about the Curve. It has a belt clip, but you can’t charge the phone while it’s holstered. I’m gonna shop online today for a better holster. Here’s a couple pics. Keats- I couldn’t get my camera to focus as I had to take with no flash in a dark room as the sensor on the phone doesn’t light up the keys in normal light. For the record, the Curve is everything I was hoping for + 150%!!!

1) How would I get this addition $100 credit for getting a new data plan? I dont see anything about this
2) I’ve never had bluetooth capability before. Does anyone recommend a specific headset? I’ve read reviews all morning and every headset seems to have issues
Can’t wait for this bad boy to show up!

I read some blogs that said VZW customers were already ordering/receiving their Curves – I called and lo and behold, they are in! I placed my order Tues and got it yesterday (Thurs). It takes some getting used to but so far I’m very happy with it.

FYI I called the 800 Customer Service # – go through the prompts as if you are a new customer or changing/adding services. Also, make sure you request the $50 mail in rebate and the $100 instant rebate (if you are signing up for the required data plan for the first time).

I got the curve for $119.99 plus they gave me my $50 rebate instantly since I had a problem checking out on their web site. $69.99 plus tax!!! I also added the car charger, silicone case and holster for it total with tax was $116.57!!!! They are billing me for all this on my next billing cycle! =)

Reply

45 Billy May 8, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Don’t worry folks, the keys do indeed light up.

The pocket that comes with the curve does not have a belt clip. It looks like a belt clip, but the piece that looks like the belt clip is actually a design in the pocket that is raised up to create a gap in the pocket so the trackball doesn’t get pushed it.

I have been using the pocket for now until I get used to the durability of the curve. I am waiting til the soft rubber skins are available at the verizon store as well.

It’s a pretty trick little deal overall, and I for one am very happy with it.

Hope this helps.

Set up two email accounts (corporate and personal) and was receiving email instantaneously. It couldn’t have been easier! Just wish I would have had it earlier.

Got the pearl last Saturday because they would not tell me when the Curve was going to be released. Got a phone call this afternoon (The 9th of May) telling me my Curve was waiting for me on the Shelf, and they would return my Pearl and exchange it for the Curve.

Went to the Store and got it :D they said they weren’t supose to sell them until the 12th but Some how my name got on a waiting list and i got it 4 days early.

LOVE THE PHONE!! WAY BETTER then the pearl. Its amazing and really stunning in person
