How Long Will It Take Verizon To Release The BlackBerry Curve?

by Robb Dunewood on May 6, 2007 · 1,293 comments

Update 2:  The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Ships Friday, May 9th.

Update: The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Has Been Officially Announced!

Now that Verizon has officially announced that the BlackBerry 8830 will be available just a few months after the release of the BlackBerry 8800 on Cingular, we know that they can get things done without taking the better part of a year. The BlackBerry 8830, however, is a business device and business BlackBerry users live in Verizon’s wheel house.

The big question for me is how long will it take for Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve? Might the Verizon CDMA BlackBerry Curve follow just a few months behind the GSM version or will the company with the nation’s best network revert back to their usual year long lag behind?

Research in Motion announced the BlackBerry Curve differently than they have devices to come before it. The Curve was announced carrier unbranded. We can only assume that RIM didn’t offer a period of exclusivity to any one carrier opting possibly for a bigger payday by allowing all carriers to come out with the BlackBerry Curve relatively around the same time.

If this is the case the only thing really holding Verizon back is the porting the BlackBerry Curve over from GSM to CDMA, a task that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis says can be done quickly, so, I ask the question again. How long will it take Verizon to release the BlackBerry Curve?

Interesting, I spoke to the Verizon Chat online and got some more info because I said I was concerned about the Curve being sold out. I liek the part when she says “We won’t sell out- we have enough for a small country”

Please wait for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience!
A Verizon Wireless online pre-sales specialist has joined the chat. You are now chatting with Michael.
Michael.: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
    You: Hi
You: can you tell me when I am eligible to upgrade my phone?
Michael.: Hi! How may I assist you today?
Michael.: Would you like to upgrade your Primary line today?
You: I’d really like to wait for the Curve 8330 to come out, is that going to be soon? It’s worth waiting for, and hopefully Verizon will have it by the 15th which is my upgrade date.
You: Is there anyway I can pre-order it?
You: or get on a list so it’s not sold out by the time I can upgrade?
Michael.: I apologize, but there isn’t any way to Pre order it, but it will be available by the time you’re wanting to Upgrade.
You: Okay- hopefully there will be enough.
Michael.: Our customers have been waiting YEARS for the Curve, it’s about time we’re offering it.
You: It’s really been out that long? wow, I thought I would be getting the newest phone out. Oh well.
Michael.: No no no it hasn’t been released yet. T
Michael.: Our customers have been waiting that long for it’s release.
You: Ohhh- wow, you mean it’s been in the works for BB to release it.
You: wow, that’s alot of excitment, again, I hope it’s not sold out by the time I can get it!
Michael.: Yes, it has been in the works for quite sometime. Everything had to fall into place, though. May I make a suggestion for getting your Curve first?
    You: Okay, sure, thank you.
Michael.: Purchase online, as you’ll receive much better pricing, and your phone will arrive in roughly 2 days.
You: Really, as opposed to calling the 800 number and getting advice on the data plans?
Michael.: Yes, really. Customer Care is great for information about data plans, but we offer better pricing online.
You: Okay, great. thanks! wait- but how will that get it faster?
You: Cust Care said they ship in 2 days too.- I think.
Michael.: You’ll be one of the first to purchase it, because it will be released online before anywhere else.
You: Ohhhh, Ok. Even the 15th would be the first? ok, I thought I would be late or something, I don’t know why. Maybe because I have to wait until the 15th
Michael.: You would have to wait for the 15th for your secondary line.
You: So maybe waiting until the 15th it might be sold out- ugh
You: I feel like this is something that would sell out as soon as its released, like within days.
Michael.: It won’t be sold out, sir. We have enough in stock right now to supply rather large country.
You: Ha Ha Ha, – I get it. Thanks for all the help then, I will take your advice wisely.
Michael.: You are most welcome. Is there anything else I may assist you with today?
    You: That’s great, good- day
Michael.: Thank you for visiting Verizon Wireless, I look forward to speaking with you again. Have a great day!
Your chat session has been ended by your Verizon

NYCamman and Karla, that site says that they only support and make the BB 8300/8310, and 8320, not the 8330 we are looking for. Just a FYI.

  • NYCamman

    TPNOVA

The Shell for CDMA VZW Curve is identical. It shouldn’t be a problem. But I would consult them before ordering anyhow.

  • Brannigan

I live in San Diego and was able to place an order over the phone this morning. At first the CSR told me that it wouldn’t be available until later in the week. When I asked her about rumors that people were placing orders early, she told me that it seemed to be happening on the East coast. As I was talking to her on the phone, someone in the background told her that it was OK to start placing orders. I should be getting mine this Wednesday.

  • TPNova1

    Good Idea– just in case.

  • blackberryless

I was one of the lucky few that ordered the curve online yesterday and I just received my tracking number this evening. It says I should be wasting the day away by 3pm tomorrow. Good luck to everyone . . On a side note, since this is my first blackberry does anyone have suggestions on key applications I should download?

    Thanks

  • Michael R

Just ordered mine as well on 1-800 2 JOIN IN, $151.81 total after credits and 2 year renewal, should receive by Wednesday.

  • G

    blackberryless….

    check pinstack.com

for some reviews and possible purchasing of apps.

I think you should at least get:
empower (html email reader) . that way your emails don’t come as a bunch of links and html code…

for all those with 8330′s already…

    http://www.themes4bb.com/forum/

is a great place for themes (also has themes for all bb’s, so if you don’t have the 8330 yet, just DL some for the ones you already have).

    enjoy..

  • A.K.

MaybeCurveOwner – You should have received your tracking number by now. I read about a few people not getting confirmation numbers Sunday but then getting an email later with all of the info. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if your Curve showed up today.

I think the pre-order luck some people had was hit-or-miss. With a phone that’s be so eagerly anticipated some sort of confusion was bound to happen up at corporate. I tried calling in Sunday, and the woman told me she could take an order. Today though, a telesales rep said she didn’t even see the BB8330 Curve on her list of phones for sale. Because I was upgrading my phone on my family plan, and my dad wasn’t around I couldn’t get the last 4 of his SSN# and had to put off ordering it. Now it seems like I’ll just have to wait until Friday. Oh well. At least it’s here.

You’re right it’s probably much more worth it to just buy the Curve directly from Verizon for $439 instead of going on Ebay and paying upwards of $600. Unless you have cash to throw around, and would rather deal with someone on Ebay than a Verizon sales rep. If you search Blackberry Curve 8330 you’ll find a few auctions that are around $300.

HERE’S A PIC OF THE ACTUAL BB8330 IN THE BOX, SOLD ON EBAY:

I called Verizon late Monday and they were saying that they are taking orders now but they will be holding all the packages until the 9th at the shipping facility. All the stores will be able to sell them over the counter on the 12th…so if anybody actually receives there order in hand please post it. I work for a shipping company and a lot of time they generate tracking numbers but the package will be held at the facility until the release date.

I’ve been watching this thread for some time thanks to all the people who put real info up. its been great to share info.
    Thx,

  • blackberryless

G – Thanks for the info.

Josh – I just checked my tracking number and it says as of 7:15 this morning it is at the destination at the sorting facility in my building in chicago. It is my guess I will have it in the next several hours. I will keep you posted though.

    Hey All,

Fedex Status: On FedEx vehicle for delivery

Looks like today will be the day……

  • SB

    Mine says the same!
Fedex Status: On FedEx vehicle for delivery

I will let you all know — I am going home before I go out to another meeting, should know by 3:30 4:00ish!

  • Ugh!

Is there anything more lonely than seeing the “out for delivery” message on the Fed Ex tracking system and glancing out the window every few minutes waiting for that little bundle of joy to be delivered?

    11:44a — CURVE has arrived.

    Not-so-MaybeCurveOwner anymore.

    Enjoy everyone……

I just ordered my Curve and I would like to say it has been fun coming back on this board all this time and reading the post.

Also I would like to say, I tried ordering it through the regular 1-800… customer service channels but I had no luck after calling 5 times yestreday. I only had luch after I called a Sales Rep in NY and I was able to order then. He told me since I worked with a corporation and on the corporate account I could order it but it would not be available to the “public” until Friday. But if I were you I would try to chance it and get some numbers of some Sales Rep.

One sales rep’s # I saw was on the howardforum:

    Also you can

    Gary
    866-745-4679 x9460

Let me know if this work, if not I can give you the guy’s number I talk to in NY this morning, even though he is a sales rep for corporate accounts you can see if he will be able to do something for you.

    I hope this helps

  • NYCamMan is still lame.

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Your Curve may have arrived, but you’ll always be a loser.

  • It’s here!

So, with great anticipation, I just opened the FedEx box from Verizon…

Um, this is kinda strange to say, since I’ve been following this thread since January… remind me again what the big deal was?

The UI seems so clunky, nothing seems intuitive, the little track ball is not very responsive at all, the keys are just painted on text…
I guess it’s my fault for expecting choirs of angels to start singing or something, but I can’t help but feel ridiculously underwhelmed… perhaps some folks would like to start extolling some virtues here to get me pumped up again?

  • curvee

congrats! mine should be arriving tommorrow.I cant wait.I’ve been waiting since January.I have a question for you curve owners.does it have the same format as a regular verizon blackberry for the positioning of the applications

  • Phil (CEO)

    Curvee

Yes, its RIM, all the shit is relativly the same.

  • Phil (CEO)

So VZW bought the wireless spectrum. I shoulda know that though!

  • marla

question though, i never had a curve before and dont know how to do the whole ringtone thing with this. anyone have any suggestions on where to get ringtones from? that would be great!
    thanks!

  • Billy

Mine is arriving by 10:30am Wed. morning. $69 and change after all my discounts and new every two and whatnot.

    Woohoo!

  • Yvette Terry

I am on my way…ordered it over the phone this evenng..should have it within 2 business days. How long does it take to receive confirmation?

  • Newby

crackberry.com has a ringtone section that tells you how to do it and supplies ringtones for you.

  • PB

It’s awesome that its here. I guess they had to force it earlier than expected for various reasons:

    1) it already being posted earlier.
    2) All the upgrades that were accepted over the past couple of days.
    3) To beat out Sprint if they do release tomorrow.

Either way, I’m pretty happy with a nice price of $80.

  • Beverly Hills, CA

    wat is a better idea

    upgrading my phone or…

buying the phone without a contract and just switching numbers?

what is more better and a more money saving option?

    NY Curve still waiting
    #1148. May 3rd, 2008, at 6:30 PM.

I think everyone that says they actually have the phone or have it being delivered before the release date is full of it. I’m sure some of us would like some HARD CORE proof. Every time I called Verizon they have said . . . “No, we can’t order it, nor are we taking pre-orders”. Interested in how those few of you seem to have gotten “lucky” enough to have someone send out a phone that’s simply not available yet and all well before any officially posted release date. How about someone posts a picture of their new phone . . . with the brand new box that it came in . . . that would be proof enough for me. I doubt we’ll see that either. Looks like May 9th, online orders still.

    ^^^^
Now I realize the post I quoted above was from a few days ago, but iIcould not resist responding to it.

No one is under any obligation to prove anything to you, if you don’t believe it then you can wait until the 9th or the 12th or whatever to order yours. Lots of people had ordered and/or recieved their curves over the weekend. Try doing some research over at Howard forums where pictures and “proof” were posted over the last several days.

Just because it wasn’t working for you, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Try harder. Look at other sites and see what numbers people were calling, and what reps they were talking to. Then maybe you’d get somewhere. There’s HARD CORE proof in a lot of places, you just have to look for it.

  • Ryan B.

I have been reading these posts for some time now, I really appreciate the updates and educated guesses. I am actually surprised that I didn’t have a melt down for having to wait this long, but this evening I called Verizon (Huntington Beach, CA) and was able to order the Blackberry Curve. I had it shipped overnight. Hope this helps anyone in my area.

Once again, thanks to the board!

  • Ho hum…

So on Tuesday around 2 Pm, the fed ex delivered the little bundle of joy

Um, after following this forum since January, waiting and following every twist and turn for almost 5 months I have to ask…

    What was the big deal?

I mean, now that I’m finally really using it, the interface is clunky, the trackball is disappointingly squishy (and I imagine it will only get worse when it gets gunked up like the old fashioned mice always did), the UI is not intuitive or all that great for getting things done… Sure, the keypad is surprisingly good to type on, but the letters are just painted on? jeez, even the free phone that i’m replacing from 4 years ago had light up numbers so it could be used in the dark…

I hate to sound so down, especially since some people for some reason are not able to even order yet… But I need some serious re-flating of expectations! Perhaps I had built it up too much in my head, but this thing feels like maybe something slightly better than most of the competition, not something head and shoulders above the field. What was so great that we all followed this forum so religiously?

Or maybe it’s the 5 freaking hours I had to spend on the phone with Verizon on Monday to finally get my order correct…

  • Flash

    Honest feedback…
Whenever I get a new phone frm Verizon they have disabled some of the functionality that I actually bought the phone for. I know about the GPS issue but am wondering what else has been disabled on the phone so that we can PAY Verizon for the same functionality?

  • DJ

    Ho hum…
You probably won’t see the benefits as the curve comes out of the box. I previously owned the ATT Curve and am awaiting my Verizon Curve. These past few weeks I have missed my curve. The Curve is actually the sexiest blackberry to date. the pearl is weird on the fingers. Use it for a week and then get back to me. the fact that the letters are painted on are negligible as you won’t keep the phone long enough for the numbers to come off.
in comparison to the ATT curve, the Verizon Curve has more RAM, which means you should be able to run google maps on it without using up all your resources.
Seems as though you never had a blackberry you might want to search the blackberry and crackberry forums in order to feel the love.

    PB and Billy,
how did you get your phone so cheap?

  • Billy

Can someone with one in their hands answer this: Are the keys backlit? I would be disappointed to find out they were not backlit. I guess I will know in a couple of hours.

  • Richard

I called Monday and was able to pre-order the phone and was told I would be called Friday to complete the order. I was surprised by a call from the same rep yesterday telling me that her supervisor is allowing them to ship now, so I completed my order and will be receiving it today. I also checked the website and the Curve is now on there for ordering.

Thanks to all who have posted for a very entertaining time.

  • Billy

Mine is now on Fedex vehicle for delivery. Should have it in my hands before 10:30a. Hoping for backlit keypad.

  • Curve Lover

Gotta love Fed Ex! I’m charging mine right now. Billy, it doesn’t look like the keys are backlit. I’m like a kid in a candy store tho! It’s sooooo cool. It came with a wired headset that has two earplugs…so I guess this is the stereo effect? It is so light and small compared to my old Treo and even the 8703 I’ve been using for a month. The color of the phone is sharp looking and classy (San Diego) despite everyone’s cry for black. The edges are rubbery so it won’t get scratched. It’s just impressive in general. Even sliding the back cover off to install the battery exposing the inner workings and camera…it’s just very cool…sorry that’s the best way I can describe it! I’ve been following this forum since early December, so it’s fun to finally be posting receipt of my new Curve! I’m going to go to Crackberry to see what people recommend to download as add ons. G, I love the idea of the html email reader. Please anyone post other “absolute necessities” for add ons. NV here’s actual proof of my charging CURVE!!! http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk112/heathtalbot/

  • Ho hum…

Ok, I was a boob… it LOOKS like the lettering on the keys is painted on, but I went into a dark room and confirmed, backlit all the way.

    My bad (and my apologies!)

  • Billy

Just spent the entire day programming the phone, setting up e-mail accounts, putting in contacts, and just playing with the damn thing. My neck hurts!!!

    Keys are backlit!!!!!!

Very nice device. Even paired it with my car’s bluetooth. Flawless.

  • Billy

Funny story. I was on with Verizon activating the phone and getting help with e-mail accounts, etc… and they kept telling me that they didn’t know the phone had even been released yet.

HA!!! While they were helping me do all the programming!!! Too funny!

  • PB

I got mine for the standard price of $319.99. Now I had the “New Every 2″ which means my contract was up and could get a new phone of choice up to $100, so that dropped it to $219.99. I then signed up for a data plan. (since I hadn’t had a blackberry before) This drops is an additional $100 to $119.99. Plus the $50 mail in rebate I’ll have drops it to another $69.99 plus taxes and what not to $80 bones. Good stuff.

Also my buddy that works for verizon said he’ll switch my contacts over for free and hook me up on other small stuff. :)

  • Keats

Can someone who has reveived their blackberry curve do a huge favor and post some pictures of it with the keys lit up???

  • Pitbull

The world edition came with a “leather” hoster – the curve comes with a phone “pocket” – is this a “holster” without a belt clip?

    What’s in the box, guys?

  • Jesus and Curve Lover

Pitbull- The pocket is the one lame thing about the Curve. It has a belt clip, but you can’t charge the phone while it’s holstered. I’m gonna shop online today for a better holster. Here’s a couple pics. Keats- I couldn’t get my camera to focus as I had to take with no flash in a dark room as the sensor on the phone doesn’t light up the keys in normal light. For the record, the Curve is everything I was hoping for + 150%!!!

  • TPNova1

Wow- the post really slowed down alot, probably because now we all know when and where to get one. !

  • CurveVirgin

Just placed my order online. $169+tax. A few question comments.
    1) How would I get this addition $100 credit for getting a new data plan? I dont see anything about this
    2) I’ve never had bluetooth capability before. Does anyone recommend a specific headset? I’ve read reviews all morning and every headset seems to have issues
Can’t wait for this bad boy to show up!

  • JT

You actually where the holster? Hahahahahah.

  • Confused08

This site has better holsters for the curve.
