I think the other consideration is that it's hard to maintain control over the end user experience with 3rd party apps. This is key to Apple. Apple wants their users to have an absolutely flawless experience with their products.

With 3rd party apps, that gets harder to achieve. As #2 alluded to, many 3rd party apps are poorly written and can even mess up a device.

I don't think people will be bored with their iPhone any time in the near future, begging for 3rd party apps. My guess is that with the iPhone, as with most pieces of technology these days, most people will not even begin to figure it all out and use all of the features.

And this, ladies and gentelmen is why the iPhone can never be a 'smartphone' and as for people wanting simplicity, nobody is going to hold a gun to their head and force them to install apps, if they don't want them then don't install, at least give people the choice.

Third-party apps are crap. They just take up room on devices and don't do much. Like other person posted...people want simplicity.

People want simplicity...they are so overloaded with everything these days...including technological choices...that they appreciate it when someone narrows the options for them.

I know some have theorized about a day when people would be actually charged for software having less features, just because it makes it easier to use and less problematic...in other words, you would be charged to subtract features, not the other way around...

I don't think it will come to that, but it's an interesting illustration on how people want some of the noise filtered out of their lives...
