Have You Installed BlackBerry Messenger 5?

July 21, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 54 Comments

As you may already know, BlackBerry Messenger 5 was leaked the other day and has been getting a lot of good reviews even though it is not officially available yet.  My initial plan was not to install it and just wait for it to be actually be released, which we hear could be any day now.  I say that was my initial plan because, after being asked about 500 bagillion times what I thought about it, I decided to go a head and install BBM 5 so that I could give it the once over.  I’ve got to say that I am pretty impressed.

I want to reiterate that BlackBerry Messenger 5 has not been officially released so you download at your own risk if you decided to install it.  If however, you are the adventurous type, you can find a bunch of OTA links after the jump…

How safe is it to download this application? Will it ruin my warranty if something goes wrong?

***DO NOT INSTALL*** unless your device has an OS higher than v4.5.0.131 or it will NOT work.

So if you’re running 4.5.0.77 (like me) on your 8130 or 8330 – either 1) don’t do it 2) wait for the official release or 3) update to another carrier’s OS that’s higher than .77…

As much as I’d love to try it I think I’m gonna wait till it’s pushed out officially (which is supposed to be soon…)

I may try to convince my roommate to put it on his Tour 😉

THIS is why RIM should grab back control over their devices and allow only trusted, tested app’s download from RIM BB APP World onto their smartphones. THIS is why “leaked” OS updates should not be the norm, and that timely OS updates should be pushed out directly from RIM, not from service providers or other 3rd parties.

Download the update from your carrier. No, it will NOT work unless you have a software version that’s equal to or higher than 4.5.0.131 – which 4.2 is NOT.

      It’s simple:
      4.5.0.55 < 4.5.0.131

Hello, I have a blackberry pearl 8130 v4.5.0.77 with Solo Mobile. I really want to download the new messenger 5.0 but I believe it has to be 131 or higher. Is there a way to upgrade that or is my phone just too old?

    Thank you!
