Has Verizon Cancelled The BlackBerry Storm 3 9570?

October 1, 2010 by Robb Dunewood 26 Comments

There is an interesting report coming from Endgadget stating that the BlackBerry Storm3 9570 has been cancelled.

It could still launch somewhere, but it won’t be on Verizon, apparently — and considering that it was shaping up to be an ever-so-slightly-retuned Storm2, we can’t say we blame them.

There has been a lot of speculation that the BlackBerry Storm 9570 wasn’t going to be called the Storm3, but, be a refreshed version of the BlackBerry Storm2. Whatever the name, it looks like the device has been cancelled…

This will be an issue for more Verizon BlackBerry users than you think…

There is no doubt that the BlackBerry Storm is the most hated BlackBerry of all time, however, there are a ridiculous number of BlackBerry Storm and Storm2 users (millions), and many, like myself, can’t comprehend going back to a BlackBerry without a touchscreen.  This poses a bit of a problem for RIM.

Every BlackBerry Storm user that bought a BlackBerry Storm when it first came out and stuck it out is coming up on the end of their 2-year contract.  My guess is that if you’ve been using a BlackBerry Storm for 2-years, moving to another BlackBerry without a touchscreen will be difficult.  So difficult that many Storm and Storm2 users that can’t get a Strom3, Storm2 Refresh, or whatever the 9570 would have been designated  might just move to Android.

Are you effing kidding me. I have been hanging on to this BlackBerry Storm even though I could get a because I want to get the the new on that could run that new web browser that that slider phone has. I can’t go to AT&T cause my job pays my bill so it it looks like I will be one of the folks moving from the BlackBerry to Android.

I am going to be honest. I was probably going to take a look at Android when my plan comes up right after Thanksgiving. I kind of like my Storm because I do use it for work and I have a lot of friends of BBM but i am one of those weirdos that doesn’t like BlackBerrys with the keyboards.

I say good riddance! The Storm was one of the worst pieces of tech to come out this decade.

That being said… RIM would see huge churn if Verizon doesn’t offer a touchscreen device that can run BlackBerry 6 in the short term.

I wonder if maybe the Torch is coming to Verizon sooner than we may have thought.

That would be sweet because my work would still pay my bill if it were on Verizon.

    Engadget is wrong…

The 9570 isn’t being cancelled. It is just not going to be released as the Storm3. You will see a new BlackBerry Storm within the next 4 to 6 weeks and it will run BlackBerry 6.

I so hope you are correct! I love my Storm and will be sorely disappointed if there isn’t a new one coming with OS6 in the next few months. After using a touchscreen on the Storm (original), a physical keyboard would seem like a step backward. And, I’m one of those who really like SurePress. Hope that is still a Storm feature as well (as long as I’m wishing).

The only way that Verizon won’t release the 9570 is if they are able to put OS 6 on the 9550 or they release the Torch instead.

I know that everybody is all Android Crazy, but, the BlackBerry still rocks and Verizon would be stupid to abandon it.

There is no question that after RIM burned Verizon with the original Storm that Verizon has put their money behind Android but Verizon needs to be careful not to alienate BlackBerry users. They are loyal to the platform and there are millions of them that use them for work, so, switching isn’t an option.

I can’t believe that even with all the bad press the Storm has gotten that Verizon would be stupid enough to allow platform with millions of users just die.

Do remember that the Storm was what Verizon wanted… RIM did not burn Verizon

I have had the storm since the first day. I will not go back a keyboard. I heard that androids do not push yahoo emails, is that true. maybe I will look at the torch.

It does not support push but you can upgrade to yahoo plus for imap, use the Yahoo mail app or see this forum post on android central.

Personally, I would not rush to Android until Verizon confirms this rumor.

This would be a stupid move to cancel the Storm 3. I stopped using the Storm 1 purely due to performance and switched to Android then back to the BlackBerry 9650. Running BlackBerry 6 on the 9650 is GREAT but I would rather have a touchscreen device.

Here is hoping the Storm 3 releases with BlackBerry 6. Hopefully if anything Verizon forces RIM to put better hardware in the device. Or should I say better hardware than the Torch.

I have the 9530 and I’m past my upgrade date. I have absolutely no interest in Droid (even though my sister’s screen is so huge and brilliant) and I really like Verizon…that being said, I was holding out for Storm 3, with a tinge of hope that they might bring the Torch to Verizon 🙂 I personally can’t fathom the thought of not having some sort of touch screen or not carrying a BB. And seriously how much longer can I keep using a 9530…its almost a dinosaur…tech faux pas…its like wearing white after labor day…

      LMAO that is priceless.
Even with a new BB and OS 6 I still feel like I am behind with tech.

I love my BB Storm. Christmas sees my 2 year contract up and I was looking forward to a new Storm. It will probably mean going to Android if BB do not release a good Storm phone around the festive period.

Rob, Verizon’s been after me to update, even though my 2-years don’t end til next June. Want to stay with Verizon; but my Storm experience has been so rocky I just don’t see how I can stay for BB for my personal mobile (my employer will keep me on an AT&T Curve for as long as they can). Gotta say the Droid 2 looks pretty promising (touch + keyboard!); and I’m drooling over a larger selection of apps than BB will ever offer.

Maybe something better is coming and Vz won’t have the exclusive on Storms in US.

I have been a blackberry user for many years with Verizon and have owned the original blackberry since day one. I have been waiting diligently for the blackberry storm 3 and would love it if they added ptt to it. Now that they may not be coming out the storm 3 I’ll probably switch to Att for the torch. Sorry Verizon, you should give people more choices than just an Android when it comes to touch screen.

Maybe the Storm 3 will be a GSM phone, as it should be. Suddenly the world opens to the Storm if that is the case.

The only way that this would make any sense for RIM is if they do go ahead and put BlackBerry 6 on the Storm2. They can’t just cancel the Storm without something to bridge the gap until the real QNX Storm comes out…

I have the original Storm – my first Blackberry. I’m getting horribly jealous of those othre sexy GIANT touchscreens. BUT…it appears the font on Android/Droid X can’t be increased. (it can temporarily be increased but not permanently. I suppose there’s an APP for increasing the font – but after paying $200+ for a phone, the friggin’ thing should come with the APP installed) As a legally blind user, this is absolutely CRUCIAL to me. That’s why I went to the BB. I can actually iREAD my text messages and my contacts!! I don’t need to watch a movie on the stupid phone…I want to be able to see who I’m texting or calling. That said…my 2 years are up with Verizon and I want a new phone! I’m liking the looks of the Torch. Verizon…..give me something besides the Droid. Please. I’ll just have to hang onto my Storm…and be embarrassed about it….until Verizon offers something better by BB

The original Storm was (and is still) my first Blackberry so I have no basis for comparison but I love it for its screen real estate and the ability to read and compose in landscape, my favorite orientation. Negative commentary about it always surprises me.

I’m at the memory limit but I’m holding out because of my BB email address, BBM and for RIM to provide Verizon with a phone that completely erases my Android lust. A Storm3 will do if it has WiFi and memory equal to the Bold. That’s really not a lot to ask.

You’re theory just may be right. I’ve had my original storm for two years now, and of course my contract ends soon. I will certainly stay with Verizon Wireless, but hell no am I getting another storm. My storm has been so glitchy, and I hate it when the touch screen stops working right, it’s almost like my phone gets drunk for a little while.. Just ordered my Droid X on Amazon Wireless for 80 bucks, can’t go wrong with that!
