This is possible without installing applications. Emoze works the same way, it checks mail every X minutes (push mail is another thing: the mail is pushed form the server, not pulled by the phone every X minutes). So if you need only to check Gmail it's better to use IMAP, because the password is stored only at your phone. I've got a workaround for you. If don't want the emoze signature to be added to your outgoing emails, only use it to be notified when something hits your Gmail inbox.
