Enhanced Google Mail Plugin For BlackBerry Smartphones

August 22, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 4 Comments

There have been rumors floating around for some time that Google and RIM were working on a plugin for GMail that would bring additional features to BlackBerry users that have Gmail accounts such as:

  • Add and remove labels and stars on email messages
  • Report spam email messages
  • Perform local and remote searches
  • Archive email messages
  • View related email messages as a single conversation (threaded view)

With the Enhanced  Google Mail Plugin for BlackBerry Smartphones, these rumors are now a reality.

The Enhanced Google Mail™ plug-in for BlackBerry® smartphones introduces an advanced level of email service integration for BlackBerry smartphones. It supports additional Google Mail™ features that provide BlackBerry® Internet Service subscribers with broader access to their Google Mail accounts while on the go.  The Enhanced Google Mail plug-in is optional. Existing and new Google Mail integrations will continue to function without it.

The only downside to this plugin is that synchronization is one way, working only from the BlackBerry to the Gmail web interface.  Changes made in the web interface will not be reflected on you your device.

Even still, the Enhanced  Gmail Plugin for BlackBerry Smartphones is a huge step forward over standard BIS Gmail support and I recommend that BlackBerry users setting up a new Gmail account on their device use it.

To get the plugin, just point your device to http://blackberry.com/gmail.

Still no two-way sync…so it’s no better than using the Gmail App, which at least syncs once every hour or so.

You recommend that Blackberry users use it WHY?

Have you even TRIED it, or are you guessing that it might be interesting? Are you aware that you can’t use it from the unified mailbox?

This plug in is underwhelming and disappointing. I doubt many people will get much use from it.

At least with this app when I read an email on my BB it shows it as read on gmail account like before. I also like being able to search old messages from the device too. I say keep up the good work google.

I have downloaded it to my Bold and once i restarted the device it only showed all emails in one box and not separated them by email inbox. moreover, sometime you see an email in the main inbox but not in the others…
