Personaly, I could care less with what the call or tag it with. If they feel it would make life easier for everyone out there, then so be it.

Robb: what you are suggesting is adopting the OS naming strategy that Apple follows…giving the OS a name rather than just a number. I think it’s a good idea, but I also wonder at this point how many people really care.

It seems to me that a new OS for a BB is something only the techies pay attention to; it’s not like when a new computer OS is released by Apple or Microsoft.

So in the end I don’t think it matters a whole lot. I don’t think we’re going to see people lining up to get the new BB OS the way they did with Apple’s Leopard, for instance.

RIM already uses names for software/hardware builds but they are usually kept internal

I like the idea of changing the name. For techies like me, we really don’t care what it’s called, but a shorter name will no doubt have better overall mass appeal.

Well, the naming conventions are already in place, just outsiders don’t see them, same with their device naming…europa,lancer so on and so forth, but I have to say the majority of BB user’s don’t even know they can update their handheld software anyways, the only way they learn about it is by calling their carrier when they have issues and the tech support rep asks them to locate it under their options menu (I am an employee of AT&T Data Support), I see this everyday at work, so for the “uninformed” …they could name hobblyhooblah!! it won’t make a pinch of difference at the end of the day, and for those that know what their OS is, it just means we’ll all have to stop referring to it as 4.3 and now move onto 4.5, but I’m still willing to bet we see a launch of 4.3 before it ever gets “rebranded” 4.5 despite BGR’s sources.
