We’ve been hearing about “paperless boarding passes” for years and it looks like Continental Airlines users flying out of Houston will be the first passengers in the country able to use their BlackBerry or other compatible mobile device to check-in in lieu of the paper based boarding passes that we are all accustomed to.

We have been in favor of this for a long time and had fairly consistent dialogue with TSA on our desire to do this,” said Mark Bergsrud, a senior vice president for Houston-based Continental. “We were ready technically and we are pretty nimble with our ability to develop software and test it.

Continental passegers departing out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston initially will be the only travelers able to check in with their mobile device. If successful, however, the program may be rolled out to other airlines in about three months.
