With a such large number of corporate business travelers on the BlackBerry you would expect that they type of application that would drive on the platform would be the travel companion.

This, however, is not the case for KAYAK, a popular travel comparison service, who recently announced that they will no longer support the KAYAK mobile app on the BlackBerry platform.

When we started KAYAK in 2004, we issued BlackBerries to the entire engineering team so we could communicate instantly 24/7. Today we’ve all switched, and it seems our users are doing the same. Our audience of BlackBerry users has been declining precipitously, and we can’t justify the cost any longer.

KAYAK will continue to support the usual suspects like Android and iOS, but, it would appear that decision to drop BlackBerry support was not based on market share alone as KAYAK plans to continue to support Windows Phone which has significantly less share than RIM, and, at the moment, slower growth.

BlackBerry 10, the next version of the BlackBerry operating system, will support Android apps, so one has to wonder if KAYAK will submit their Android App to BlackBerry App World.

We’ve just heard that WhatsApp Messenger for BlackBerry has received a refreshed user interface and will be available in BlackBerry App World very soon.

WhatsApp is arguably the most widely used cross-platform mobile IM client, and, in addition to BlackBerry is available on Android, IOS, Windows Phone, and Nokia Symbian devices.

I know that some BBM die hards will immediately point out that WhatsApp is no replacement for BlackBerry Messenger. I think, however, the point to WhatsApp is that you can use it to communicate with contacts who use smartphone platforms other than BlackBerry.

If you are looking for a good cross-platform mobile IM client, check out WhatsApp Messenger. You can pick it up in BlackBerry App World as well as respective app stores for for other platforms…

In an effort to better promote BBM Music, Research in Motion’s new social music sharing and discovery service, the company is offering free 4 month subscriptions to users who sign up to BBM Music by Jan 4th.

What is really cool is that RIM is offering 4 free months of BBM Music to both new and existing users of the service…

BBM Music normally cost’s $4.99 per month which gets you access to 50 songs, 25 which can be swapped out each month. BBM Music also allows you to access up to 50 songs from each of your BBM contact’s libraries limiting the amount of music available to you only by the number of your BBM contacts who also use the service.

You can pick up BBM Music in BlackBerry App World or, downloat OTA to your BlackBerry by visiting http://www.blackberry.com/bbmmusic.

Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 is out of beta and officially available for download in BlackBerry App World. The new hotness in this version of Twitter for BlackBerry is multiple account support, a feature that many BlackBerry users have been waiting on for some time.

Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 features include:

Multi-Account Support – Have up to five accounts on your Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones app. Switch between accounts and cross-post Tweets and Retweets from one account to another without switching the current account view.

Enhanced “Share with BBM™” functionality – Easily share Tweets with BBM Contacts and Groups.
View multiple Twitter accounts in a single timeline – View a stream of Tweets from up to five Twitter accounts in the Social Feeds timeline, or opt to filter individual Twitter accounts.

Post a Tweet to multiple Twitter Accounts – Publish a Tweet to one or more Twitter accounts simultaneously using Social Feeds

Personally, I’ve been a big fan of Twitter for BlackBerry, but, always had a third party Twitter client or two installed so that I could use more than one Twitter account from my BlackBerry. Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 eliminates the need for multiple Twitter clients.

BlackBerry App World v3.1 is now available for download in BlackBerry Beta Zone and contains a few new features including Wi-Fi only download support and content ratings.

Unfortunately we must also report that Research in Motion has included the most bass-ackwards implementation of application gift requesting imaginable. Instead of allowing a gift giver to initiate the process of giving of a BlackBerry app to someone, BlackBerry App World v3.1 instead allows users that want gifts to beg for them via BBM.

I can honestly tell you that the first time that I ever receive an unsolicited gift request from a BBM contact will be the last time I ever use BBM and possibly BlackBerry App World. Let’s hope that RIM kills the gift begging feature in BlackBerry App World v3.1 before it becomes officially available, or, at the very least, adds the ability to opt out of being begged by contacts to buy them apps.
