BlackBerry rival Nokia E61 now shipping

According to a Reuters report, Nokia, the biggest handset maker in the world, released the Nokia e61 which is designed to compete directly against the BlackBerry.

“First deliveries started late last week. It’s gradually becoming available across the globe,” Pekka Isosomppi, spokesman for Nokia’s Enterprise division, told Reuters.

It will be interesting to see how the eSeries smart phones fair in the wireless email market. These devices not only compete directly against the BlackBerry they will eventually run BlackBerry Connect that will complement the BlackBerry.

But the real issue is that I cannot get the BB push email today on this device. Until then this seems to be less compelling versus the BB8700 or other BB device.

Jeff,

I couldn’t agree with you more. Because the ESeries phones don’t run BlackBerry Connect out of the box they would never be an option for me.

Honestly, I think that Nokia would rather you use Nokia Business Center anyway. The probably offer BlackBerry Connect in a effort to pull some BlackBerry only share away from RIM. Once you get a BES user onto an ESeries device, it becomes much easier to pitch an alternative delivery system.

i know you guys don’t want to hear it, but the e61 will use good’s goodlink email delivery system…at least that is what it has said on good’s website for almost a year.

Nokia is now promoting the IntelliSync Mobile Suite, NBC seems to be dead :-)
The E61 will support multiple email push solutions. NBC, BlackBerry Connect and GoodLink are just some of the clients. But most of the clients will be released later this year.

Does anyone know when the E61 will be available to purchase in the USA? and what carriers will be selling it? Thanks, Jon

I like the fact that you can send and receive e-mails while talking on the phone.

dp,

I wrote an entire post about not being able to talk and send email at the same time on the BlackBerry. I agree, that is a very cool feature. Hopefully next-gen 3G BlackBerries will have this feature.

I am afriad I’ve been convinced to go with E61 than 8700 for my next phone. Wi-Fi, miniSD, and good media (AAC) support (albeit no camera) push me over the fence.

It’s all over eBay now. The price has dropped significantly since it first came out.
