BlackBerry OS 4.7.0.113 To Be Next Official Firmware Update For BlackBerry Storm

March 30, 2009 by Robb Dunewood 24 Comments

The title pretty much says it all.  OS build 4.7.0.113, which was leaked about a week or so ago, will be, according to Engadget Mobile, the next official firmware update for the Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530.

All we can see is it is about fracking time.

If you can’t wait until Verizon officially releases 4.7.0.113 you can download the leaked version at the link below.

I heard about this a little over a week ago and have been running .113 for the past 10 days…solid build, no issues except for some memory leaking, but that’s been the case on the Pearl, Curve, etc. My VZW guy also confirmed that .113 will be the release number, and most likely this week or next, unless a last minute issue comes up.

The version has addressed many of the issues that I was having (and should have been the version when releasing the product back in November). Call clarity is better, speed dial and volume is good, bluetooth is good, faster web browsing, stronger signal, etc. The only crash I experienced was in video mode. Wasn’t able to replicate the error again, and video is working fine as well. May have just been an isolated issue of too much multi-tasking.

I’ll say this…the update has certainly restored my faith in the Storm product. I’m actually enjoying it now as if I just bought the device. With that said, I may just hold off on the purchase of a Niagara and see how that does before jumping in head first. For now, the Storm is my phone.

    @bluehoreseshoe…

I felt exactly the same way when I installed .09 and then .113. Hoepfully the Storm didn’t get too much bad press for it to be a success because the updated OS makes a world of difference. It is litterally like it is a different device.

I just got my Storm over the weekend. I think it has 4.7.0.75 on it. Will I void my warranty if I install this new OS on it because I just might take it back if I don’t see a huge improvment in performance?

Is there a procedure to revert back to the factory default if I don’t like the new OS?

Sorry for the newb questions, but, I am a newb.

@Jansen no it will not void your warranty, but you might not get support from tech support, until it is an official firmware release by VZW

I’ve been on the look out for some decent apps ever since I bought my storm two months ago. Crackberry has a good forum but I prefer Blackberry Storm Apps

Bloody thrilled that I returned my Storm before 30 days was up.

Nowhere close to the iPhone in terms of touchscreen elegance or interface, horrible battery life, full of glitches and bugs, and ruins the best point of a Blackberry: hyperproductivity.

0.113 is still half baked. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a class action lawsuit yet.

Only apologists and people who secretly regret sinking cash on this device will give props to .113

so is this OS update just for the storm or other BB’s as well? I have the BB pearl 8220 with OS 4.6.0.174. This version seems to work fine, but My MSN messanger will not send or recieve messages, it used to when I first installed MSN messanger, and my Video Camara lags behind and sometimes my videos come out with a still picture of whatever I was recording and just audio. In otherwords the video laggs out and the audio keeps going. the only way to fix this problem is to re-record the video, which many times is not always possible like when you want to record a once in a lifetime sight or somthing of that nature. Would this likly be related to my OS softwear? if this update is for the storm only, is there an OS update for the pearl 8220 thats newer/better than the 4.6.0.174?

    Thanks
    Nathan

Has anyone tried .113 with a 9530 from Telus?

I’m looking forward to the new update. Moving from .75 to .109 made a huge difference. Still have some performance issues where it appears to be hung, but it eventually responds. Haven’t had to pull the battery once since upgrading to .109 last week. May upgrade to .113 this weekend.

I’ve spent some time playing with the iPhone. Very nice interface, but I still find the Storm better for what I use it for.

I strongly advise against this. Do not download this. It is not the next official release. I’m sorry but, the fact that it’s not available as an official download should ring a bell.

Admittedly, I too ignored the red flag in the back of my mind and downloaded this. I used this update for my Storm, and my wife’s. Then a buddy of mine downloaded it and used it to update his.

I thought mine was ok, until this morning when aside from the long running memory leak issue all of my contacts were blown out. Got an IM from my buddy who said that the update turned his Storm into a brick. No carrier info, no nothing. Not even all of the icons. He ended up going back the old OS, as will I when I get home.

The short story, out of 3 Storms, this only worked on one. My wife’s. Ironically, her Storm is one that she received as a replacement from our insurance. How did that work?

We all want very much for RIM to produce an official release for this because while we love our devices we all know there are flaws we can’t ignore. And I believe that RIM will do just that. However in the meantime, rather than having the patience of a child I will remind myself next time that if it hasn’t been officially released, it hasn’t been officially released. Call it what you want but this version is just another leak that RIM knows isn’t up to spec.

I installed this new update and had problems first it messed up my browser SECOND AND MOST IMPORTANT: IT VOIDS OUT YOUR WARRENTY WITH VZW IF YOU INSTALL IT F.Y.I. I had to get service on my storm today and they told me they will no longer service the warrenty because I voided it when I put this software upgrade. 🙁 So now I’m stuck with it if something serious happens etc.

Celia – Connect your device to your computer. Do not launch your Desktop Manager. Go in to your browser and go to http://www.blackberry.com/storm/update

You can then click “Check For Updates” which will then cause your desktop manager to launch (this for me has been the most affective way of handling updates). At some point you will then be able to downgrade back to the original OS.

Once this process is completed, in your BlackBerry Desktop Manager, go to Backup/Restore. When you upgraded your OS, it backed up everything first. Your databases, contacts, perferences, everything. By default it probably dumped the output file to your My Documents folder. Just do a restore using that file (you’ll know it when you see it).

This should resolve all of your issues. Now, all my buddy had to do was revert back to the old OS. I personally had to do all the steps I just listed in order for me to get my device back to the way it was.

Oh and by the way, the Verizon guy is a liar and is just enjoying being an a$$hole. Typical of the lousy in-store experience. He either didn’t want to be bothered, or (more than likely)) didn’t konw how to fix it as these are smartphones and are not under lockdown by Verizon.

And The Saga Finally Comes To A Close…… So I’m sitting there at dinner after previous posts about this, thinking my phone is fine. But NO. I realize I have no browser. When I open Maps, I get a message saying “Your device is not configured for BES or BIS. Please contact your provider or system administrator.”

So I try upgrading again to .113 and this time I’ve got my browser back. Only voila! All of my contacts are completely gone. So I restore them from a backup. Only now, guess what? NO FVCKING BROWSER AGAIN! Same message when I launch Maps.

So, finally I decide to repeat a previous act hoping for different results. I decided to downgrade yet again to .75. I don’t know why, but this worked. I have my browser and phone. The network and carrier data is configured correctly, I have all of my contacts and my Jawbone bluetooth was already configured and working (previously it was present but didn’t work until I deleted and paired with it all over again).

Again, lesson learned. If it’s not an official release, you should probably keep your pants and wait for the real deal. Even if it ends up sucking, at least it won’t be a game of Russian roulettte.

Aside from the memory leak, .113 has been solid and stable for me.

I did go back and downgrade my software back to the vzw version .75 and my phone seems to back in working order and back on the warrenty. 🙂
Like kernal32 I had nothing but problems the few days I had it on my storm I lost ALL of my connections to the internet- browser, email and all others that use the web. I learened a lesson faster is not always better.
I too will wait for any new offical updates from VZW my advice to those looking to update theirs with the leaked version its reallt not much better other than moves a lil bit faster.

ok although my question was never answered, I gather from all the comments that this is a OS update for the Storm so question answered in my books.
Now a new newbie question…what is memory leakage and how do you know if your having this problem? I have the 8220 pearl with OS 4.6.0.174. The way most people make it sound it seems like your vitural memory “leaks” somewhere even though there are no other programs open that would be responsible for using up more virtual memory. Am I correct?

Thanks again and sorry if this really isn’t the place for this type of question.

Ok, I pasted the link to this earlier and now my post is gone. I wouldn’t be able to produce the clearest definition so here’s the first paragraph from Wiki:

    >>In computer science a memory leak is a particular type of unintentional memory consumption by a computer program where the program fails to release memory when no longer needed. This condition is normally the result of a bug in a program that prevents it from freeing up memory that it no longer needs.

This term has the potential to be confusing, since memory is not physically lost from the computer. Rather, memory is allocated to a program, and that program subsequently loses the ability to access it due to program logic flaws.<<

So basically when we’re referencing memory leaks when talking about the Storm we’re referring to the imperfection in the OS that causes it to hang off and on.
