BlackBerry Messenger

I know that I have talked about BlackBerry Messenger before and even recently listed it as one of my 5 must have free BlackBerry downloads, however, I feel that I need to mention it again because it is just an incredibly useful and nifty application.

Now, I will be the first one to tell you that BlackBerry Messenger is not the most technologically advanced IM client for the BlackBerry, however, in classic BlackBerry style, BlackBerry Messenger is easy to set up, simple to use, and flat out gets the job done when it comes to sending quick messages to another BlackBerry user or even a group of users.

One of the things that I like most about BlackBerry Messenger is that all BlackBerry users are able to use it. You don’t even have to sign up for an account. If you have a BlackBerry, download BlackBerry Messenger and invite other BlackBerry users via email or their BlackBerry PIN. Invitees that don’t already have BlackBerry Messenger installed can download the app over-the-air via a link in the invitation they receive or just go to the downloads section of mobile.BlackBerry.com.

do you have to have internet access on your bb to be able to use bb messenger?

2

kristy 12.12.07 at 7:20 pm

when you are chatting on the bb messenger, and when you have sent your messege, there is a check mark and then like an R or D right above the check mark. Does anyone know what they stand for?

Edward 12.18.07 at 3:16 pm

D is Delivered. R is unknown to me..but I suspect maybe it means rejected or returned?

5

Sophie 12.20.07 at 9:49 am

D is delivered, R is read.

a couple questions:
is using bb messenger free?
do messages get recorded? thanks

7

Jordan 12.28.07 at 10:00 pm

I think the r stands for received as in the person has been on the page that the message was on and had looked it over

Chris Peters 01.22.08 at 10:53 pm

My friend and I have been wasting work time all day trying to invite and accept each other to BBmsgr. It has been a colossal waste of time. What are we doing wrong? It’s supposed to be easy!

anwar 01.23.08 at 12:11 pm

click the trackwheel, select add a contact, select [Use Once] & click the trackwheel. you can add your friend by his email address or by his HH PIN.

take care

Is it free? I use with my friend in London who has blackberry. Is it still free? I am using it just since last 2 days and I am worried that I might get slapped with big fees for international messenger use.

My boyfriend gave me his blackberry 8703e and when I go to blackberry messenger it still has his sign in name and email address set up. How do I change that to mine? I do have a blackberry address of my own and its set up to my phone any help?

13

jay 02.10.08 at 5:19 pm

i have just baught a blackberry and started using bb messenger and i was wondering whether it is free or not, i am worried that my bill will get out of hand, some one please let me know thanks.

14

curtis 02.11.08 at 9:48 am

yes the messenger is free from blackberry to blackberry

15

curtis 02.11.08 at 9:51 am

when there is only a check mark after you send a message, it means it has been sent from your phone, but there phone hasnt recieved it yet, ie if there phone is shut off, if there is a “d”, it means it has been delivered to the other phone, and the “r” means that they have opened the page to read it

16

Jesse 02.18.08 at 7:53 pm

Where can i download this program

17

Robert 02.22.08 at 9:19 am

Is there a way that someone can contact me from their desktop using BB Messenger if so where can my secratary find the download? This would be so easy for her to contact me!! Please if it doesn’t exist, please develop the software ASAP!

18

Sami 03.06.08 at 12:51 pm

Kristi

When there is a checkmark next to the message it just means that the message has been sent

19

LO 03.06.08 at 5:51 pm

Is there a way to block/stop blackberry messages? do they not go through if i switch status to unavailable?

20

KELLIE 04.11.08 at 11:35 pm

THE R STANDS FOR THAT THE PERSON YOU ARE MESSAGING HAS READ THE MESSAGE! AND THE D MEANS IT WAS DELIVERED TO THEM!!

21

Frank 05.04.08 at 2:35 pm

I have a “D”, I guess by reading these posts, mean delivered… but I also have an “A” What does the “A” mean? anyone?

22

rohit 05.12.08 at 6:31 pm

cant we get bb messenger for other phones such as nokia e90

if someone knowos how - pls assist

23

Will 05.23.08 at 10:37 pm

But I still don’t understand about the D with the check mark. 99% of the time when I send a text, I just see a check with no letter (and these are texts that I know have been read). 1% of the time, I send a text and see the check with the D. Why is it different? Can anyone clear up the rationale for why this happens sometimes and doesn’t happen other times?

24

alan 06.03.08 at 2:03 am

I need to know the answer to rohit’s question too, do ‘Blackberry Connect’ phones (such as the Nokia E90) which boast blackberry functionality have the ability to use blackberry messenger on them?

25

Juan 06.10.08 at 6:29 pm

Frank,

The A stands for “Acknowledged.” It’s the same as “R” for read. Believe it or not, this is theme-controlled. On a Verizon-provisioned 8830, using the Verizon theme will display the “A,” and switching to one of the RIM themes will make it be an “R.” Bizarre.

26

Jo 06.11.08 at 10:39 am

I have a BB curve and I used to be able to use the BB Messenger without any problem until my company email was activated through Enterprise Activation. Now I can receive messages, but when I send/reply the ther person doesn’t get them. I get a “D” next to the message, and all my contacts are busy/pending. Anybody have any solutions?? This is so frustrating!!! Thanks.

27

Frank 06.12.08 at 3:53 pm

Thanx Juan, that is bizzare…. I have the 8830 with Verizon, leave it to Verizon to be backasswards with this whole “A” business.

28

Josh 06.22.08 at 4:03 pm

I have a friend who got his pphone shut off by verizon and i have at&t but when i send him a bb message i comes up “R” meaning received does anyone know why this is.

29

gaby 07.08.08 at 12:21 am

30

Stacey 07.09.08 at 4:45 pm

If you delete a contact in the bb messenger- are they still able to send you messages?

31

emaleigh 07.28.08 at 9:48 am

32

McCabe 08.27.08 at 1:01 am

you can also send songs *clips* over BB messenger…

33

BlackBerry Messenger

by Robb Dunewood on August 1, 2005 · 21 comments

BlackberryBlackBerry Messenger is a new application from Research in Motion that allows you to chat with other BlackBerry wireless device users in real time directly from your BlackBerry handheld.   Features include:

  • PIN to PIN real time messaging
  • Group Chat
  • File Transfer
  • Contact Status
  • Message delivery status

BlackBerry Messenger combines the reliability and exceptional user experience of BlackBerry with the familiar look-and-feel of instant messaging programs.

BlackBerry Messenger is available for download from the BlackBerry website and only works in Internet Explorer.  If you own a BlackBerry, this is definitely one download that you don’t want to miss.

I got really excited about Blackberry Messenger until I read “not supported by Cingular” on the download site. I hope Cingular adds support for it in the near future.

2

EJ Wasson 08.30.05 at 6:09 pm

I was able to get it on verizon, but now If only I knew someone else who had one….

If you get here. And have bbm. Ping me. EJ Wasson is my I’d.

Q Dude 06.30.06 at 2:07 pm

anyone know a way to install BB messenger on the motorola Q, or a program that can connect to a PC to message BB’s?

6

Robb Dunewood 06.30.06 at 2:33 pm

Q Dude,

This cannot be done because BB Messenger works on RIM’s network via PIN messaging.

If would be interesting to see if RIM makes a BB Messenger Client for devices that run BlackBerry Connect.

7

Emilie 10.18.06 at 8:32 pm

I LOVE bb msgr! It’s so much fun. Yahoo has an agreement with Rogers and the
msgr is on the actaul phone. I wonder when they’re going to get MSN. That would be the best!!!!

8

Robb Dunewood 10.18.06 at 8:43 pm

Emilie,

Rumor has it that a MSN Messenger Client for the BlackBerry could come out by the end of the year.

9

Reynold 11.11.06 at 2:25 pm

Does this work using the unlimited data package offered thru t-mobile? or does this use SMS text messages? Thanks for any info

10

Roy 11.20.06 at 10:17 pm

Does the BES allow for the capturing and storing of PINs and/or BlackBerry Messenger conversations or is special software required to do such a thing?

14

Robb Dunewood 03.25.07 at 9:31 pm

Mike,

There is an entire thread with people posting the PIN numbers so that you can add them to your messenger buddy list over on BlackBerry Forums. You will have to supply either your BlackBerry PIN or an email address, however.
