BlackBerry Messenger

June 19, 2006 by Robb Dunewood 170 Comments

I know that I have talked about BlackBerry Messenger before and even recently listed it as one of my 5 must have free BlackBerry downloads, however, I feel that I need to mention it again because it is just an incredibly useful and nifty application.

Now, I will be the first one to tell you that BlackBerry Messenger is not the most technologically advanced IM client for the BlackBerry, however, in classic BlackBerry style, BlackBerry Messenger is easy to set up, simple to use, and flat out gets the job done when it comes to sending quick messages to another BlackBerry user or even a group of users.

One of the things that I like most about BlackBerry Messenger is that all BlackBerry users are able to use it. You don’t even have to sign up for an account. If you have a BlackBerry, download BlackBerry Messenger and invite other BlackBerry users via email or their BlackBerry PIN. Invitees that don’t already have BlackBerry Messenger installed can download the app over-the-air via a link in the invitation they receive or just go to the downloads section of mobile.BlackBerry.com.

when you are chatting on the bb messenger, and when you have sent your messege, there is a check mark and then like an R or D right above the check mark. Does anyone know what they stand for?

I think the r stands for received as in the person has been on the page that the message was on and had looked it over

when there is only a check mark after you send a message, it means it has been sent from your phone, but there phone hasnt recieved it yet, ie if there phone is shut off, if there is a “d”, it means it has been delivered to the other phone, and the “r” means that they have opened the page to read it

But I still don’t understand about the D with the check mark. 99% of the time when I send a text, I just see a check with no letter (and these are texts that I know have been read). 1% of the time, I send a text and see the check with the D. Why is it different? Can anyone clear up the rationale for why this happens sometimes and doesn’t happen other times?

    Frank,

The A stands for “Acknowledged.” It’s the same as “R” for read. Believe it or not, this is theme-controlled. On a Verizon-provisioned 8830, using the Verizon theme will display the “A,” and switching to one of the RIM themes will make it be an “R.” Bizarre.

To alleviate your concerns regarding the cost of text messaging with BB IM. There is none. This is a function of BBs. This will work with any BB regardless of the service provider. You may BB IM Sprint to Verizon, T-Mobile to Alltel, and any combination you choose for free.
No text charge of any kind. BB IM is a Blackberry function not your service provider. This will work any where. I have personally used the IM with a friend in Las Vegas while I am in the Michigan. No charge.
BB IM is available at the Blackberry website. Just enter the address in you BB browser and go through the options.

Ok for those having trouble on your bb. Go to rim.com and dowload the latest desktop software (free). Install it, run it, connect your bb via usb cable and sync your handheld. In the applications menu select “messenger” and sync again. Now messenger is added to your handheld. For those having trouble with messenger on enterprise mail, this is bc your company has disabled the feature when setting your pin up to the BES server. Security settings can prohibit messenger dowloads etc, you may b able to use it with a personal email set up on your device in addition to your enterprise. On to another question, the dots by someones name in messenger are actually the blackberry logo, the have enabled this feature s

I had the 8300 Curve smart phone and I had that very problem when my friends with newer phones and I wanted to connect. The old phone was less on the PIN system than the new ones for some reason. Now I have the 8500 series and I don’t have the problem. So it’s less to do with carrier than to do with model.

    Hey guys,

let me elaborate this as many of you are asking this question repeatedly. On BB msnger the designations next to your message mean the following:

TICK: Message has been delivered from your device.
D: Message has been delivered to recipients device.
R: Message has been read by recipient.
A: Recipient is writing a reply.

pretty simple. sometimes due to mobile network lag times and connectivity they may be slow to change, but thats what they stand for…

    enjoy BBm’ing…

My husband and I are on the same carrier (Verizon) and even the same plan! but it only shows as read, even if he replies. We used to have the Read status when he was on AT&T and we were on the old 8300 series Curves, now we’re on newer ones and it doesn’t seem to work. Any tips on how we can send read statuses? Hi,

BBM does not cost to send or receive messages, whether they are in Canada or the USA. See it as using Skype or any other messenger. BBMs are not text messsages.

      I hope that helps.

Update your OS with the software it came with or download the software from blackberry.com or your provider maybe… After an update, install the bb messenger. They new version is really nice. You will need a usb cable with a mini connector on one end… I don’t know if the 8100 updates over the air….

Upgrade your OS to the latest version using the CD it came with or through the BB Desktop Manager then try again.

If they add you and you accept, you don’t need to add them. The don’t get your invite because they are already in your contact list.

Hi, I’ve got the BlackBerry Storm and have only just decided to try out the messenger. Me and a friend tried adding each other but neither of us are receiving the invite and both of our requests just say pending.
I thought i was missing out something in the setup or something but then i managed to get an invite off my brother and he got mine.
Can anyone maybe tell me why its my friend and i that are having the problems???
Its really doing my head in now, i’ve searched forums everywhere and nothings helped…

Would love it if someone could help me pleeeease!

    Cheers

I have seen this before and have added people via email or PIN. Delete the first request and try one or the other. if you use the latest version of BB Messenger and have a camera in your phone, you can take a picture of their “barcode” and add them that way. easy.

It is probably hidden in one of your folders. Check Downloads and your Instant Messaging folders. If it is not in either one, try uninstalling BBM and reinstalling it again.

Maybe a good ol battery pull will help? A soft reboot may work also… some phones allow you to do a soft reboot with alt btn+right uppercase btn+del btn. I’ve tried to do the keystrokes on a storm and storm 2 but they dont seem to have this feature. Works on the curve and tour I know.

I dont know if this will work but you can probably change your default message service by clicking on the BB button while in mail and go to options -> email reconcilliation -> Message services (change this to the other email account)

I can still type and just pay attention to what I’m typing and then send it and it will show up, but it doesn’t show while I’m typing it. Does anyone know how I can fix that?
