BlackBerry Forums Has A New Look

You may or may not have noticed but I have been kind of out of it for the last week or ten days because I have been on vacation. As I am getting back into the swing of things I’ve noticed that the BlackBerry Forums interface has been updated.

From my initial glance, nothing has drastically changed. It looks like the color scheme has been modified just a bit and there is a new logo.

The BlackBerry 8800 Takes a Beat Down From The BlackJack

c|net paired the BlackBerry 8800 up against the BlackJack from Samsung in a 5 round Prize Fight where the two mobile devices went head to head in different categories. Unfortunately for RIM, the BlackBerry didn’t put up much of a fight winning none of the rounds losing 4 out of the 5.

I have never really been a fan of the BlackBerry 8800. From the looks of it, the c|net reviewers aren’t big fans of it either.

BlackBery Personal Use Tax

I know that there are several RIMarkable readers that live in the UK so I am hoping that a few of you can chime in a explain the BlackBerry Personal Use tax that goes into effect in April.

Please tell me if I’ve got this wrong, but, it looks like employers used to be able to give their employees up to £2,500 worth of equipment as a benefit in kind under the home computing initiative without tax consequences for private use. Starting in April, however, employees who use this equipment for significant personal use may have to pay taxes up to £500.

Are companies in the UK tax exempt when purchasing computer equipment? Here in the U.S. most states have a sales tax that is tacked on when BlackBerrys are first purchased in addition to sales tax on the the monthly service charges. It is no where near 20% percent, however.

emoze vs. BlackBerry Showdown: Round Two

Free “Push” based mobile email delivery company emoze is challenging the BlackBerry to another Showdown at the CTIA Wireless 2007 conference next week in Orlando to see who’s “Push” based email delivery system is the fastest.

In the first showdown, emoze beat the BlackBerry thumbs down. My guess is that emoze will win the speed test a second time, however, like I said the last time, it probably won’t mean much if it does.

Is Your BlackBerry Vunerable to a Denial Of Service Attack?

The French Security Incident Response Team issued a security advisory late yesterday described as a “low risk vulnerability” that primarily affects BlackBerry Pearl devices running OS 4.2 and earlier.

A vulnerability has been identified in various BlackBerry devices, which could be exploited by remote attackers to cause a denial of service. This issue is due to an error in the BlackBerry browser that fails to properly handle overly long URLs, which could be exploited by attackers to cause a vulnerable device to become slow or to stop responding by tricking a user into following a specially crafted link.

You can fix this vulnerability simply by upgrading to BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2 Service Pack 1 (4.2.1) which can be found here.

3 Possible Relationship Saving BlackBerry Tips

I was just reading an interesting article over on the SouthBendTribune.com website entitled “Saving marriage from the BlackBerry” and it offers 3 tips for keeping your BlackBerry addiction from spilling over into your personal life. I must admit that, at least at some level, I practice all three of these tips.

The first tip is no BlackBerry in the bedroom. My motivation for keeping my BlackBerry out of the bedroom is a bit different than the one suggested in the article, however. The constant blinking light and the random vibration from incoming email drives me nuts. Additionally, keeping my BlackBerry in my bedroom would counteract the benefits of tip number two.

More tips after the jump…

BlackBerry Billionaire Boys Club

Research in Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie made the Forbes Billionaire Rich List coming in at the 583rd and 618th richest people in the world. Mike Lazaridis is worth an estimated $1.7 billion dollars and Jim Balsillie is right behind him at $1.6 billion.

I just want the Research in Motion nominating committee to know that I am available for the vacant Chairman of the Board position.
