Unlimited Everything Plans Could Bolster BlackBerry Sales

I was just reading over on BGR how Sprint’s Simply Unlimited Plan does include the BlackBerry (there was confusion on that) and it got me to thinking, the such plans by Sprint and other carriers may actually increase the number of consumers buying BlackBerrys.

There is no doubt that one bar to BlackBerry ownership for many consumers is that the BlackBerry service above and beyond what you pay for everything else is too expensive. Unlimited plans that are inclusive of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) are much more attractive. The argument that other smartphones will cost you less each month pretty much goes away.

It would be interesting to see if carriers see an uptick in BlackBerry sales after implementing an unlimited plan similar to Sprint.

Red Sprint BlackBerry Pearl

Although Sprint nor Research in Motion has announced it as of yet, a red Sprint BlackBerry Pearl 8130 has been spotted for sale on Amazon.

I guess that Sprint didn’t want to be outdone by Verizon who just announced their Pink BlackBerry Pearl the other day.

I Doubt We’ll See A CDMA BlackBerry Curve Any Time Soon

Since the release of the Verizon BlackBerry Pearl, soon to be followed by the release of the Sprint BlackBerry Pearl (Nov. 23rd as rumor would have it), we have received a wave of questions asking when the BlackBerry Curve would be out on Sprint or Verizon.

I don’t have any more inside information than the next guy who spends way to much time wondering what RIM will do next, however, I can all but promise you that there won’t be a CDMA BlackBerry Curve out before Christmas.

We ran a poll a few weeks ago just to see when RIMarkable readers thought the Curve would hit a CDMA network and the overwhelming majority of the folks that responded don’t think that we will see the BlackBerry Curve until next Spring, however, about 20% thought that it would be here before Christmas.
Well, unless those pollsters mean Christmas of 2008, I don’t think there is a snow balls chance that we will see the CDMA Curve that soon.

Sprint To Offer Unlock Codes To Customers

Sprint, or Sprint / Nextel as they are now officially called, will start offering unlock codes to customers requesting them that want to use their Sprint branded phone on another CDMA network.

This move comes as part of a settlement of class actions in California and Florida that claimed Sprint locked the devices to make it difficult for customers to switch carriers taking their Sprint phone with them.

The settlement covers all customers who bought Sprint phones between Aug. 28, 1999, and July 16, 2007. It should allow those phones to be switched to competitors whose networks are compatible with Sprint’s, such as Verizon Wireless and Alltel Corp.

The question I have is will the move prompt Verizon to discontinue their practice disabling devices beyond factory defaults? The BlackBerry 8830 has built in GPS, however, Verizon cripples this feature in their branded version. Sprint, on the other hand, does not.

I don’t imagine that there will be a huge wave of Sprint users switching their devices to Verizon just because they aren’t locked down, however, there will be some and I can’t imagine Verizon telling potential subscribers willing to pay the highest premiums on the U.S. that they will only take their money if the device they uses says Verizon accrues the bottom.
