The Palm Foleo Got Canned Before It Got Started

by Robb Dunewood on September 5, 2007 · 0 comments

The latest post over on the Official Palm Blog is a message to Palm customers, partners, and developers from Palm CEO, Ed Colligan, saying that he has decided not to stick the last nail in the Palm coffin to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration.

To make a long story short, Palm needs to focus on making Treos and its development platform only. The Foleo, a laptop sized, full QWERTY keyboarded, laptop like device that is not intended to replace your laptop, is developed on a different platform from the mobile devices it is supposed to be a companion to.

Palm Is Having All Kinds of Problems

by Robb Dunewood on August 13, 2007 · 16 comments

Usually when we talk about the the Palm devices and their buggy nature, we generally are talking about software glitches or hardware glitches. Today, however, we have learned that Palm and Verizon have pulled ROM updates for the Treo 700p and 700w/wx devices.

That’s right, the ROM update intended to fix hardware and software bugs itself has bugs. Classic…

According to a Gizmodo insider, both the BlackBerry Pearl 2 and the Palm Gandolf have been confirmed to come out on Sprint.

Sprint?

I have to be honest, I couldn’t tell you if Sprint regularly releases Palm devices on their network first, however, it is rare for a BlackBerry to hit their network before it hits Verizon. What does that say about Verizon? I will leave that question for another post.

Both the BlackBerry Pearl 2 and the Palm Gandolf should hit stores late Summer or early Fall.

I can see the question coming in the comments so I will just answer it now. Would I leave Verizon to get the BlackBerry Pearl 2.

Heeeeeeeeeecks Nooooo!

Palm has had a rough go it over the passed little bit. There have been numerous rumors about them being bought out. They just recently announced a crippled, Linux running, $599 laptop-like device called the Foleo, a device they are touting as a smartphone companion device. (I am still scratching my head on that one). It is becoming difficult to take Palm seriously any longer.

Just when you think, however, that Palm is about to go the way of the Dodo, they come out with new device that possibly could breath some life into company that used to reign supreme in the PDA world.

The device in question is called the Palm Gandolf that is a very grainy picture of it up top.

Yesterday we came across a press release stating that Palm would launch a new mobile device today and we asked if you thought that their new device could turn things around for the company. Well, based on leaked information about the new Palm device named the Palm Foleo.

I only have one question to ask. What in the world is Palm thinking?

Remember a few weeks ago when everyone thought Palm was about to be sold? First we thought it was Nokia that would buy the struggling smartphone maker, then we thought that it would be Motorola that would take over the company.

Well, according to Palm Inc. CEO Ed Colligan is off the auction block. He told Bloomberg News “that he is ignoring calls to sell the phone maker and is focused on winning back sales lost to competitors like Research In Motion Ltd.”

I can only worry about how the business is performing and what can we do as a team to do better, to get our products out faster, to drive for higher reliability, to grab more market share

I have just one question…

Major Palm Shareholder Expects Motorola Deal Soon

by Robb Dunewood on March 22, 2007 · 5 comments

CNBC is reporting that a major Palm shareholder, who did not want to be identified or his stake disclosed, is expecting Motorola to acquire Palm for about $2 billion.

“They (Palm) generate a lot of cash,” the shareholder added. “Paying $2 billion in cash for a company generating $120 million in free cash flow is not a stretch. They could pay up to $25 a share and the deal would still be accretive. Accretive immediately.”

We heard a couple of days ago that Palm might be ready to sell. It was believed, however that Nokia, not Motorola had the inside track.
