Ever since Research in Motion started giving BlackBerry’s names going back to the BlackBerry Pearl, it has taken a week or so for the name to settle in and start to sound natural to me. BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve, and even the yet to be released BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry KickStart just kind of role off the tongue after you say them a few times. BlackBerry Thunder, on the other hand, just isn’t working for me.
This is just one man’s opinion so take it with a grain of salt, however, BlackBerry Thunder is about as ridiculous a name for a mobile phone that I’ve heard. It sounds more like power tool or something.
“The Black & Decker Thunder… The most powerful electric leaf blower money can buy…”
I certainly hope that BlackBerry Thunder is just the code name and that RIM will come up with something a bit more eloquent. Like they named the 8100 the Pearl after the trackball introduced on the BlackBerry Pearl, the BlackBerry 9500 should be named after the touch screen it will introduce.

You may have already heard the rumors that started floating around yesterday, however, in case you haven’t Apple Insider is reporting that Research in Motion has a new internal job listing which suggests that the BlackBerry maker is looking for an iPhone developer. Most of the details about the position are hidden.
As part of a newly-created team, you’ll influence the development and design of BlackBerry software,” the listing reads. “This is a very confidential brand new team and a senior position within RIM so I can’t provide too many details. I guess you can figure out what it might be about though.
I guess there are a couple of ways you could go with this. RIM is definitely working on a touch screen BlackBerry. Maybe they are looking for someone with expertise on the iPhone’s interface. The issue I see here is that it will take them years to come up with something as good as the iPhone’s interface and as I’ve said before, RIM cannot out Apple Apple.
The other thought is that RIM is looking for an iPhone developer to actually develop software for the iPhone. The question here is what BlackBerry software could RIM possibly want to run on the iPhone? I’ve got two words for you…

You know for a wireless company whose network technology largely unused outside of the U.S. with a subscriber base comprised only of sheep, zealots and peons suffering from FUD generated by the anti-consumer machine who have been fooled into believing that their network is superior to everyone else’s (inside joke), Verizon had a pretty good quarter.
Verizon reported net income today of $1.64 billion, 57 cents a share for Q1 08 compared to Q1 07’s $1.5 billion, 51 cents a share. Total revenue is up 5.5% coming in at $23.83 billion. Even though new-subscriber growth was lower by 12%, 1.3 million of the 1.5 million new Verizon subscribers signed up to long term contracts which was almost twice that of AT&T and that includes AT&T iPhone subscribers.
At the end of the day, I doubt most mobile phone users care or possibly even know what network technology their phone uses. A lot, however, can be said for the strength, perceived or actual, of your network.

Can someone please explain to me without using fanboy logic, just how the iPhone, is killing the BlackBerry and why I should just shut RIMarkable down and sell all my stock in RIM before it is too late?
A bit of a facetious opening statement, I know, however, I am amazed at the number of people predicting the end of RIM, and every other mobile phone manufacturer for that matter, simply because Apple has released a really cool phone. Do you remember that movie Demolition Man and how all restaurants in the future were Taco Bell? Well, if you believe some of these articles, all mobile phones will be iPhones eventually.
Let’s see. Since the iPhone came out, more BlackBerrys have been sold than iPhones, RIM has posted it’s biggest quarterly earnings to date, and celebrities keep flocking to the BlackBerry when we can rarely find a picture or two of celebs with iPhones.
How exactly is the iPhone killing the BlackBerry again?

There is no doubt that most BlackBerry implementations are considered mission critical applications, but, do IT shops allocate resources to them as such?
I remember having lunch with 3 “BlackBerry Administrators” a while back and one of the things that I noticed during our conversation was that not one of them officially had the title of BlackBerry Administrator nor did any of them embrace the title that I casually threw their way. It was as though they just happened to be the guy that knew the most about BlackBerrys within their messaging group of their various organizations.
It reminded me of when I first got into IT during the old days of Windows NT administration back in the early to mid nineties. When Microsoft Exchange first came out there was no such thing as an Exchange Administrator. There was the NT Administrator that knew that most about Sendmail or MS Mail that added the feather of Exchange guru to their hat.
Today, of course, Exchange Administrator is a job title and career path in its own light. Has this become the case for the BlackBerry Administrator?

Rant Alert…
Can someone for the love of all things tell me why I cannot store contacts on my BlackBerry’s frigging memory card?
I am one of those people that has a ridiculously large address book. If think that I will ever call your number more than one time I see no reason not to create a contact for you. When you can go out an buy a 2 gig memory card for under $30 why should you ever have to make a decision as to if the lawn service guy or curb side bulk trash pick up is more important to you simply because your BlackBerry doesn’t have room for both.
So, once again, I sit here like I do every 2 or 3 months trying to go through all of my contacts and figure out which ones I don’t really need on my BlackBerry because of its severely limited internal memory.
This is so frustrating…

I was just reading an article about how Madonna cannot bear to be without hear BlackBerry and even sleeps with it under her pillow and it got me to wondering about how many RIMarkable readers sleep with their devices.
I have to admit, although I don’t sleep with my BlackBerry under my pillow, it usually finds it’s way to the nightstand next to my bed. I don’t imagine that Madonna and I are the only ones.
Do you sleep with your BlackBerry?

XM and QuickPlay announced yesterday XM Radio Mobile for BlackBerry Smartphones. For $7.99 per month select model BlackBerry users will get access to 20 channels of XM programming, mostly commercial free music channels as well as The Virus (uncensored talk) and XM Comedy (uncensored comedy) via QuickPlay’s OpenVideo.
I have XM in my car on doubt that I will ever buy a car again that doesn’t have it. For me personally, however, the 20 channels that are initially being offered just aren’t enough. I carry my iPod around with me everywhere and I can get all the commercial free music that I want. The real draw of XM, in my opinion, is all of the sports, news, and talk radio that you get.
I may try the 24-hour trial, however, I think I will be a bit more interested when they offer more of the XM channels that I actually listen to.

OK RIMarkable readers. I think that I am missing the point on something and I need you to set me straight.
BlackBerry Forums member Cory Scheuer wrote a pretty good review of ThinkPost’s new BlackBerry Sync, an over-the-air BlackBerry synchronization service that will allow BlackBerry BIS users to sync contacts, calendar, and notes between their BlackBerry and Outlook without having to do so through BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
I am not going to rehash the entire review which you can read for yourself here, however, it sounds like ThinkPost does exactly what it says it does. My question, however, is why is OTA sync such a big deal for BlackBerry users that aren’t on BES?
I admit that I have always been a BES user, so, I am sure that I am missing the point of this type of solution, however, if you aren’t on a corporate messaging system where others can add contacts to a global address list, see your free/busy availability, and request appointments against your calendar in real time, why would you need to synch those things before you get back to your computer and do it through BlackBerry Desktop Manager?
What am I missing?
