As you may already know, the BlackBerry Tour, on both Verizon and Sprint, went on sale today and there has been a lot of buzz surronding its release. Many Verizon subscribers see the Tour as a reprieve from the keyboard-less BlackBerry Storm that, up until recently, had more than its fair share of problems. Sprint users are just glad to see a new BlackBerry… It’s been well over a year since the BlackBerry Curve was released on Sprint.
BlackBerry App World has just crossed the 200o BlackBerry applicatoin threshold and, later this month, will be available to BlackBerry users in Italy, France, Germany and Spain. The problem for RIM is that App World is still pretty lame, if you ask me.
The only reason that RIM came out with BlackBerry App World was because of the success of Apple’s App Store, which just turned a year old by the way. If you are going to emulate the App Store, emulate the App Store. Give me an interface that is easy to search, $0.99 downloads, and the ability to buy applications from my desktop.
I don’t expect App World to host the ridiculous number of BlackBerry applications that the App Store does for the iPhone and the iPod, but, at least make the application pleasent to use.
When the BlackBerry Storm first made its debut last fall it got, deservedly so, an awful lot of bad press. The OS that shipped completely didn’t work and the first official update was barely tolerable. Since, however, the latest official update for the BlackBerry Storm was released, we really haven’t heard much bad news about the BlackBerry Storm.
Sure, you will find a vocal few who will tell you how bad the Storm still is and how it can’t compete with the iPhone, but, if you can get used to the keyboard, the Storm really isn’t all that bad a device.
In Consumer Reports latest smartphone survey, the iPhone 3Gs came out on top with a rating of 73 out of a possible 100 points. With all of the bad press that the Storm has received you may have thought that it would have been trounced by the iPhone, however, it had a respectable showing with respect to the iPhone with a total of 69 points.
There are still a lot of improvements that can be made to the BlackBerry Storm and we hope that we see them soon once BlackBerry OS 5 for the Storm comes out, however, the BlackBerry Storm right now, with OS 4.7.0.148, may be a better than a lot of people think.
BlackBerry OS 5 has been floating around the interwebs for some time now and we know that when it is finally officially released, it isn’t going to be the major overhaul to the BlackBerry operating system that we once hoped it would be. On one hand you can say that the BlackBerry is holding it’s own against the likes of the iPhone’s OS and Web OS found on the Palm Pre, however, I don’t know that the BlackBerry OS is in a ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ type of situation when compared to it’s competitors.
I just read an article that quoted analysts that stated Palm has sold 150,00 Pres since it’s its launch. Other hearing that the keyboard is way too small, the screen and case are a scratch magnet, far too few applications are available, and not being able to get your hands on one until mid July, reviews of the Palm Pre have been mostly positive.
The question that I want to toss out is can Palm actually sell enough Pres to truly contend with the likes of the BlackBerry, the iPhone, and even Adroid and, dare I say, Windows Mobile devices.
Pretty much ever since the day that the first iPhone was announced we’ve seen blog posts, news and magazine articles, and television reports questioning whether the BlackBerry would be able to survive once the Apple machine got wheels rolling. I think it is safe to say that Research in Motion and the BlackBerry have fared pretty well and have even exceed expectations.
I, however, want to ask a question from the other side of things. Should Apple be concerned about RIM? With the onslaught of multiple new BlackBerry devices on pretty much every carrier of consequence over a relatively short period of time, I say that Apple should be…
I won’t make this one of those long rant type posts that I’ve been know to write from time to time. I just want to know if and when E*Trade ever plans on updating E*Trade Mobile Pro for the BlackBerry Storm? The Storm came out in November of last year. We are already half way through June.
I don’t know… Maybe it is just me, but, I was expecting more from the iPhone 3G S. Is a better camera and MMS enough to make you replace the 3G you bought just last year? Has anything been added to the 3G S that will make that BlackBerry user that was holding out say “Now I am ready to get an iPhone”?
Personally I think that the Palm Pre will cause more trouble for RIM than the iPhone 3G S, but, that is for another post. I do believe, however, that the price drop on the iPhone 3G means that we will see a ‘ginormous’ number of iPhones sold this summer and that is probably a bigger problem for RIM than the technology in the iPhone 3G S.
Back in the day when Palm was king of the hill the knock on the devices was that, although the OS was good, the hardware sucked. This is what allowed the BlackBerry to knock Palm off their pedestal as RIM put out devices with both a stable OS and and a stable operating system and stable hardware.
It looks like Palm still hasn’t figured the hardware thing out yet.
I hope that history doesn’t repeat itself… I am actually pulling for Palm.
