That’s right…  If you’ve been wanting a BlackBerry a bit newer than the original BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry Bold just isn’t quite right for you, you will be able to pick up a brand new BlackBerry Curve 8900 the day after next.

FriendleeYesterday at WES during their keynote, HP offered a glimpse into a new mobile social networking application that they are working on called Friendlee for BlackBerry.  The didn’t offer a lot of details, however, Friendlee for BlackBerry appears to be a “Linked In” style service that automatically populates your friends list by detecting your contacts that you interact most frequently with.

It doesn’t look too far along, since they didn’t do much other than copy and paste an Android screenshot onto a Storm, but they were confident enough to show it at the biggest BlackBerry show of the year, so I’m sure it’s on the way. In the long run, HP is trying to reimagine the address book so instead of chewing through a list of rarely-used contacts, you’ll be focusing on the few people you talk to on a daily basis. Take a look at HP’s research on the app for a closer look.

Google Apps Connector for BESResearch in Motion and Google are currently testing integration between Google Apps  and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  Google Apps Connector for BES will allow administrators to manage users and apply policies the same way the would for Exchange users while syncing email, contact, and calendar data with Google Apps.

Google Apps Connector for BES offers:

  • Gmail with push support, offline access, read/delete sync, spam filtering, and support for archiving/stars right.
  • One-way sync (GCal > BlackBerry) with Google Calendar, with support for recurring meetings and meeting notification alerts.
  • Two-way sync for contacts.

Google App Connector for BES is currently being beta tested with select companies and universities and will be freely available to Premier/Education customers in July.

BlackBerry Curve Outsells iPhone… Again

by Robb Dunewood on May 4, 2009 · 28 comments

Contrary to popular belief the iPhone is not the most sold smartphone in the United States.  That title goes to the BlackBerry Curve who has pretty much maintained it’s seat on top of the smartphone  hill of dominance since the quarter that the iPhone was introduced.

Based on U.S. consumer sales of  smartphone handsets in NPD’s “Smartphone Market Update” report, the first-quarter 2009 ranking of the top-five best- selling smartphones is as follows:

1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
5. T-Mobile G1

What is more impressive than the BlackBerry Curve holding the number 1 spot is that the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Pearl hold the number 3 and 4 spots respectively giving RIM 3 of the top 4 selling smartphones.  No matter how you look at it, RIM is selling a lot more BlackBerrys than is Apple iPhones.  No wonder Apple is looking to bring the iPhone to Verizon.

Xobni For BlackBerry Client Seen In The Wild

by Robb Dunewood on April 30, 2009 · 4 comments

Xobni for BlackBerry

Back at the end of March Xobni received $3 million in series B financing from Research in Motion via the BlackBerry Developers Fund.  Barely a month later, Xobni executives were showing off the app at a Mobile Meetup in San Francisco.

The app was working, and could be released sometime this summer, according to my source. The photo above shows the app on a Blackberry Bold, and appears to be showing off its contact search functionality. You type in a few letters, and it returns the contact information for every match in your inbox (even people who you haven’t necessarily added to your address book yet). I wonder what else it can do.

I actually use Xobni on my laptop and will be very interested to see how it runs on the BlackBerry.

It’s been a while since our last installment of Cool Stuff I Installed On My BlackBerry This Week so BlackBerry applications installed over the passed several will be included for the week ending April 24th, 2009.   In this week’s edition we will cover a new internet radio client, a game for the BlackBerry Storm, a couple of social media clients, and RIM’s version of App Store.

The nice thing about this weeks list is that all the BlackBerry Applications listed are free BlackBerry applications.

Alltel BlackBerry Pearl Flip

Contrary to what we thought was going to happen, Alltel, not Verizon, will be the first carrier to offer the CDMA BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 here in the United States.  The first CDMA clamshell style flip-phone BlackBerry should be hitting the street in early May and will set you back $79.99 after a $70 mail-in rebate.
