If RIM Is Smart About Things…

I was just thinking about what RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said about the BlackBerry soon becoming the MP3 player of choice for consumers and even though I think that this is a bit unrealistic, Research in Motion could make some legitimate noise if they are smart about things.

We all know that Apple and Cingular will release the first version of the iPhone sometime around the June time frame. Even with the extravagantly high price tag the iPhone will be a big hit for Cingular and Apple. It will probably crush whatever estimates Apple is putting out there for sales and will undoubtedly be one of if not the big story this year in the mobile phone industry, at least in the United States. Research in Motion, however, if they are smart about things, can capitalize on all of the hoopla that has and will continue to surround the iPhone.

Cisco and Apple Settle iPhone Dispute

Cisco and Apple have settled their dispute over the trademark name iPhone. No financial terms were disclosed, however, both companies have agreed to dismiss any pending suits.

Cisco, who has held the trademark name iPhone for years, has agreed to allow Apple to use the name iPhone on their new handheld device set to hit Cingular shelves this June “in exchange for exploring wide-ranging ‘interoperability’ between the companies’ products in the areas of security, consumer and business communications.” Cisco will continue to use the name iPhone on it’s Linksys VoIP device.

I wouldn’t be shocked if some type of Linksys branded VoIP client appears on the Apple iPhone before it is all said and done.

emoze Beat BlackBerry Push Thumbs Down

The BlackBerry may be the best wireless email device out there, but, it is not the fastest. Free “push” based email delivery company emoze beat Research in Motion’s BlackBerry thumbs down in the 3GSM World Congress Mobile Push Email Showdown last week.

Both shooters stood back to back with their respective handsets - one a BlackBerry, the other a regular mobile phone with the emoze push email application installed. A Gmail account was opened and the email address given to the two duelers. They both created an email on their handsets, walked three paces and on the count of three, turned around and pushed ’send’. The audience watched a screen to see whether the email sent via BlackBerry or emoze would arrive fastest, and as the tension started to build, the emoze email appeared in the inbox first.

What The BlackBerry Could Learn From The SideKick

If you are a die-hard BlackBerry addict when you read the title, “What The BlackBerry Could Learn From the SideKick”, you may have thought that the BlackBerry beats the SideKick in almost every way. What possibly could the SideKick teach the BlackBerry.

Well, the Sidekick could teach the BlackBerry that if it comes out with a limited edition device, gets a super-mega star like Dwayne Wade to, not only endorse, but help design it, slap a 56,000 sq. foot advertisement on the side of Mandalay Bay, and blast really cool commercials all during All-Star weekend, that an awful lot of people that might not otherwise be interested in the BlackBerry might actually think that it is really cool and check it out.

Note to Research in Motion: Advertising beyond your core demographic to the market segment you are trying to make a dent in is not a bad idea.

iPhone Theme for BlackBerry

Thanks to one of Steve St. Pierre’s readers over on BlackBerry Cool in addition to making your BlackBerry sound like an iPhone you can make your BlackBerry look like an iPhone.

BBTC’s (BlackBerryThemeCentral.com) head of operations dropped me a note this morning to let me know about his newest addition to the theme library, and I think you’ll all be pretty impressed.

For a “donation” of $5 or more the iBerry theme for the BlackBerry 7100 series devices can be yours.

Now you can make your BlackBerry look like an iPhone and sound like an iPhone… The only real question left is will we be hit with a cease and desist from Apple because we are telling you that you can.

Want Your BlackBerry To Sound Like An iPhone?

Would you like for your BlackBerry to sound like an iPhone when it rings? This is exactly what RIMarkable reader Casey wanted so he recorded the iPhone’s ringtone when Steve Jobs demonstrated it at MacWorld last week, converted it to an MP3, and put it on his BlackBerry.

What’s even better is that Casey put a video of his BlackBerry Pearl ringing like an iPhone up on YouTube.

Apple iPhone Nonsense

I admit the I was briefly caught in all the fanfare around Apple’s announcement of the iPhone last week but Apple has gone back to it’s usual ways and I have come back to my senses.

Several developers have created skins for Windows Mobile and launchers for Palm that resemble the interface on Apple’s soon to be released iPhone. Not only has Apple sent cease and desist letters to the sites hosting these files, they have sent them to blogs linking to the sites. Apple doesn’t just want you not to be able make your Windows Mobile or Treo look like an iPhone. They don’t even want you to hear that the ability to do so even exists.

Isn’t it interesting how Apple can rationalize clearly stealing a company’s trademarked of a device that they are selling but fell infringed upon if some developer makes a Treo or a Windows Mobile device look like the device they are about to come out with.

I just hope that some developer creates an iPhone theme for the BlackBerry. I will gladly link to hit here.

How Many BlackBerry Users Will Bite The Apple?

I am a certified, card carrying, diehard BlackBerry Addict and I can tell you that I will buy the Apple iPhone day one even though it is on Cingular. I have never said this about any BlackBerry… not even the BlackBerry Pearl and I know that I am one of many BlackBerry users that will buy an iPhone.

RIM doesn’t have to worry about loosing me as a customer because I am a business user. I am, however, somewhat concerned about the consumer BlackBerry users that will bite the Apple. Chances are these folks won’t float two phone bills.

There is no question in my mind that Apple will acquire more new first time consumers than RIM. The bigger question is will Apple convert existing consumer BlackBerry users into iPhone users.

Will you take a bite of the Apple?

Cisco Sues Apple Over The Name iPhone

I was going to write a post asking the question, “When did Apple get permission to use the name iPhone“, but it looks like they never did. At least not officially.

Cisco sued Apple in federal court today claiming that the iPhone violates it’s trademark. I am going to go out on a limb and say that seeing how Linksys, a company owned by Cisco, released their version of the iPhone just a few weeks ago, Cisco definitely has a leg to stand on.

“Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco’s iPhone name,” said Mark Chandler, Cisco senior vice president and general counsel, in a statement. “There is no doubt that Apple’s new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission.”
