I wonder just how much RIM has to do with that?

The BlackBerry Pearl is arguably one of the best selling BlackBerry devices to date, however, almost a year after it first debuted on T-Mobile, it, or any other CameraBerry for that matter, still has yet to be released on a CDMA carrier in the United States. Most device manufacturers, Research in Motion included, are very quick to say that all the power and decision making around device release dates lies with the the wireless carriers. The Apple iPhone release, however, tells me that this is not necessarily the case.

Could RIM exert a little bit more control than they do? I am guessing that they can.

It’s not all RIM’s fault, however…

Don’t get me wrong, the wireless carriers do have an awful lot of control, but, come on… You cannot convince me that RIM has nothing to say about it. No one understands what is going on over there at Verizon but they are probably big enough to do all sorts of crazy stuff that makes no sense whatsoever.

Sprint, on the other hand, is struggling. I cannot imagine that they are in a position to say, “You know what RIM, even though we are loosing share to just about everyone and don’t have any really compelling BlackBerry devices to offer our Nextel subscribers whose last device was the BlackBerry 7100i, we are going to pass on one of your best selling BlackBerry devices ever and continue to get our lunch handed to use by AT&T and T-Mobile“.

Actually, that does sound kind of like something that Sprint would say, but, I digress. The point that I am trying to make is that CDMA BlackBerry users may see newer devices sooner if RIM would just turn the heat up a little.

Dear Verizon,

It has been 6 months since the BlackBerry Pearl was first released on T-Mobile. We know that you generally take about a year or so for your CDMA versions of BlackBerry devices to come out after they first appear on your GSM competitors, however, I don’t know how much longer you can afford to play this game.

I call it a game because, according to RIM President and co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, the java based nature of the BlackBerry allows it to be “quickly ported over” to CDMA hardware. If it is easy to do, the only reason I can see that you don’t is because you are trying to gage the amount of time you can make your subscriber base wait without bolting along with the decreasing licensing fees you pay to RIM for new devices the farther you get away from their initial launch.

I understand that this is smart business in the corporate world. It won’t, however, work in the consumer world.

Consumers are fickle. They want what they want when they want it and when they want it is always now. They won’t view devices like the Pearl or the 8300 as a business device, but as a cool new phone that they can take pictures with and send and receive email on. I am a die-hard Verizon user and truly believe that you have the best network out there. I can honestly tell you, however, that I would switch to T-Mobile in a heartbeat to get the Pearl if it were not for the fact that my company pays for my Verizon service.

Why would I switch when I am a die-hard Verizon subscriber? Simply because they have the phone I want, you don’t, and their service is good enough. In fact, where I live, T-Mobile service is actually pretty good and although I hate Cingular, their service around here is not too bad either…. Their customer service just sucks.

The problem for you is that if a die-hard network loving Verizon user like me would leave because you don’t have the phone I want, what do you think your chances are of signing up new consumers who want the latest greatest BlackBerry devices as soon as there leaked, let alone come out on your network a year after everyone else gets them.

Don’t make the mistake of letting T-Mobile and AT&T come out with two CameraBerrys before you come out with your first. It’s time for you to come out with a CameraBerry now.

BlackBerry soon becoming the MP3 player of choice for consumers and even though I think that this is a bit unrealistic, Research in Motion could make some legitimate noise if they are smart about things.

We all know that Apple and Cingular will release the first version of the iPhone sometime around the June time frame. Even with the extravagantly high price tag the iPhone will be a big hit for Cingular and Apple. It will probably crush whatever estimates Apple is putting out there for sales and will undoubtedly be one of if not the big story this year in the mobile phone industry, at least in the United States. Research in Motion, however, if they are smart about things, can capitalize on all of the hoopla that has and will continue to surround the iPhone.

Jim Balsillie was exactly right when he said that “Apple has done us an enormous favour by saying you should expect music on your cellphone.” With the announcement of the iPhone, Apple changed the perception of a built-in MP3 player being a “cool to have” to a built-in MP3 player being something mobile phones just “should have”.

If RIM is smart about things and does something like come out with a new BlackBerry that plays MP3s and takes pictures right before the Apple iPhone is released, they could capture the attention of consumers that may have been looking at the iPhone. If Balsillie was serious about the BlackBerry becoming the MP3 player of choice for consumers they need to start now before Apple gets a stranglehold on the market. They need to start letting people know that a new picture taking MP3 playing BlackBerry is getting ready to come out. They need to get these devices into the hands of celebrities who love getting their picuture take while holding their BlackBerry. They need to start marketing BlackBerrys to consumers that read magazines like People and not only to ones who read Forbes… They basically need to do a lot of the things that Apple is doing with the iPhone.

That is if RIM is smart about things…

<a

Heck, I am one of them, however, it is more about the size of the 7130e and not so much the SureType keyboard that attracts people to it. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a problem with SureType and actually think it is kind of cool. I, however, don’t have a problem with full QWERTY keyboards either so long as the device that I am using it on isn’t the size of pocket calculator from 1984.

I imagine that most folks that like SureType would trade it for a full QWERTY keyboard Crimson a lot quicker than 7250 or 8703e users who hate SureType would do the visa versa. So Verizon, why don’t you guys put the CDMA Pearl on the back burner and go all out trying to get a BlackBerry 8800 Crimson ready by this time next year. Your BlackBerry subscribers will love you for it.

<tags>BlackBerry 8800, BlackBerry Crimson, Verizon</tags>

<a

There will actually be two versions (at least two) of the 8800, one without a digital camera code named “Indigo” rumored to come out late this year, and one with a digital camera code named “Crimson” rumored to come out Q2 of 07.

The question of the day is will the BlackBerry 8800 be even more popular than the BlackBerry Pearl? As you can see from a poll over on BlackBerry Forums, almost 60% of the poll takers say that they are 100% sure that they will get a BlackBerry 8800. Based on this I would have to say that the 8800, at least with existing BlackBerry users, could be more popular than the Pearl.

<span

The Pearl is selling like crazy right now even though one of the biggest reasons for not buying a Pearl is it’s lack of a full QWERTY keyboard. Another big reason not to buy a Pearl is it’s lack of Wi-Fi support. The BlackBerry 8800, depending on which version you buy, will have both.

Will the BlackBerry 8800 sell better than the Pearl? Only time will tell. One thing we no for sure, however, is that the BlackBerry 8800 will be popular with BlackBerry Forums members.

Read Bluetooth Blackberry keyboards are not that practical and if I had a digital camera in my BlackBerry I would have taken a picture that would have illustrated this point perfectly.

I saw a guy trying to use a wireless keyboard with what looked like a BlackBerry 8700c. We were sitting on a bus from the airport terminal to the car rental place and as the bus moved, the gentleman found it increasingly difficult to balance the BlackBerry on one knee while trying to type on the keyboard on the other. Finally, he reached into his bag, pulled out his laptop, and used the laptop as a tray to hold the keyboard and the BlackBerry so that he could type his message.

This was funny to me and I thought that I’d share. You would probably would have thought it was funny too if you were looking at a picture of a dude using a laptop as a tray for his BlackBerry and wireless Bluetooth keyboard.

Please Verizon, come out with BlackBerry with camera in it soon….

<a
