Is this the official Research in Motion BlackBerry Storm Announcement?

The upcoming BlackBerry® Storm™ is the first touch screen BlackBerry smartphone from Research In Motion and it builds upon a variety of existing BlackBerry features and capabilities to produce a truly compelling touch experience. With the BlackBerry Storm, RIM will introduce a version of software (v4.7) that delivers a new set of APIs and capabilities for third party developers including:

1) Enhancements to the existing RIM User Interface APIs to provide support for touch and gestures including proper handling of multi-touch events.
2) Support for MIDP applications that leverage touch.
3) Virtual keyboard APIs
4) Enhanced and open GPS APIs on all networks

In addition to the new API capabilities, your Browser-based applications will build upon the browser capabilities released in v4.6.0 including:
For third party developers, one of the unique features of the BlackBerry Storm is its compatibility mode which provides an operating environment for existing 3rd party applications that are not implemented to support touch. This feature will automatically convert the touch events into existing trackball events. When an application is executing in compatibility mode, a virtual keyboard will be shown at all times for text input to mimic the physical keyboard on previous devices and will only support portrait mode.

  • Improved web page rendering including AJAX
  • XMLHttpRequest
  • JavaScript® 1.5
  • CSS 2.1
  • DOM L2 (including Core, HTML, Style, Events)
  • HTML 4.01 (including Forms, Maps, Tables, Frames, Objects)
  • Improved Native Attachment Download
  • Support for downloading files via the browser

Key Features

Nokia Drops BlackBerry Connect Support On Eseries

In an interesting if not odd move, Nokia has asked all of their Nokia Eseries customers using BlackBerry Connect to move fully over to the BlackBerry and to stop buying devices from Nokia.

I guess that this isn’t exactly what Nokia said, but, they did stop supporting BlackBerry Connect and even said that RIM is now a competitor.

RIM are a competitor and have done a reasonable job in a space that is traditionally ours, so it’s no great surprise that we see this as an opportunity to give consumers a proper choice on what email solution they want.

Now, I know that Nokia is a giant handset manufacturer, especially outside of the United States, however, this move all but ensures that they will never again sell a device to a business user in the U.S. that works for a company that has standardized on BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

13,000 British Telecom Workers Going On BlackBerry Strike

It looks like we North Americans aren’t the only ones that think that employees should be compensated for BlackBerry use. 13,000 BT employees have banded together and decided to work only 36 hour weeks as well as turn off their BlackBerrys in a BlackBerry Strike of sorts after work hours in lieu of going on strike.

BT Connect users are seeking equal pay and changes to pay differentials, ranges, and progression and feel like they are being short changed when asked to user BlackBerry devices outside of regular business hours without compensation.

BT Connect members expect that their contracted 36-hour work weeks will end on Thursday. Union members will go home after they’ve worked their 36 hours as well as switch off their BlackBerrys in an effort to show BT just how much productivity is lost if employee doesn’t work outside contracted hours.
