Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and information services company, has announced that BlackBerry Connect for the Treo 650 will be available to new and existing Treo 650 users at the beginning of May.
If press reports are to be believed the move will please Telstra CEO, Sol Trujillo. It was said, when he joined Telstra last July, that he had rejected the Telstra standard-issue BlackBerry saying he preferred the Treo, and when told that Telstra did not support the Treo, replied “we do now”.

For as long as we have been waiting for BlackBerry Connect to come to the Treo, it looks like the promise has actually been fulfilled. Earlier today, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and Singapore based operator SingTel announced the availability of Blackberry Connect for the Palm Treo 650.
SingTel is not the first operator to announce BlackBerry Connect, however they are the first to offer BlackBerry Connect on the Treo, arguably the number two smartphone/PDA device to the BlackBerry. This announcement has some analyst wondering if BlackBerry Connect will actually cut into Blackberry device sales.
The short answer to this question is ‘Probably’, however I don’t think that this is necessarily a bad thing for RIM. In fact, I think that for RIM to move to the next stage of it’s evolution, it has to start to transform from a hardware provider, RIM makes over 70% of it’s revenue from device sales, to a service provider.

BlackBerry Connect for the Palm Treo is finally here, or there, depending on where you live.
BlackBerry maker Research in Motion along with Singapore based telecommunications giant SingTel today announced the availability of BlackBerry Connect for the Palm Treo 650 making them to first operator in the world to offer the long awaited application that allows you to get your email from a BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a Palm Treo 650.
Unfortunately, SingTel doesn’t offer service here in the United States so if you want to use BlackBerry Connect on this side of the pond you will have to use the Nokia 9300.

If you visit the various BlackBerry message boards around the internet you will see that one of the most frequently asked questions is will Research in Motion ever come out with a flip-phone BlackBerry. The jury is still out on that one, however, Samsung, with their new SGH-T719 flip-phone with SureType and BlackBerry Connect, appears to be filling this void.
Today at the CTIA cell-phone trade show, Samsung officially announced their new SGH-T719. As you can see, the new device is a flip-phone or clamshell style device with a SureType keyboard similar to those found on the BlackBerry 71XX devices from RIM. The T719 will run BlackBerry Connect, allowing the device to send and receive the same way you do on an actual BlackBerry device.
The T719 will also feature a rotating, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, a speakerphone, Voice command dialing, and run on someone’s, possibly T-Mobile’s high-speed EDGE data network. The Samsung SGH-T719 will be available in the September time frame. A service provider has not been announced, however, speculation has it coming out on T-Mobile, hence the T in the name.

Recently I heard someone say that they sure wished they could get email on their Treo 700w like they were able to with their BlackBerry and it got me to thinking about BlackBerry Connect and when it might be released here in the U.S.
Now the the NTP patent dispute is over, Research in Motion’s partners don’t have to worry about being sued if they allow their devices to be connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server so my guess is that we will see BlackBerry Connect clients, at least for the Treo, sooner rather than later.
The question that I have is when finally released, Will BlackBerry Connect hurt BlackBerry device sales?
Many organizations tightly control which BlackBerry devices their employees use, however, there are a lot of companies out their don’t care what device you use so long as they can hook it up to the corporate BES. In fact, a lot of companies require that their employees buy their own BlackBerry devices with their own data plans. Studies have shown that most BlackBerry users are loyal to the mobile email service, not necessarily the device and, in fact, actually find competing handset designs extremely appealing so long as they can get BlackBerry service on them.
If BlackBerry Connect ever becomes widely available on 3rd party handsets, BlackBerry device sales, which is still where Research in Motion makes most of it’s money, could possibly take at hit.
I think this is another good reason RIM should consider a Windows Mobile powered BlackBerry, however, that is for another post.

According to the Palm Treo enthusiast site Treonauts, BlackBerry Connect for the Treo is almost ready. I know that we have been hearing this for well over a year, however, Treonauts writer Blake, who is at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona says that BlackBerry Connect for the Treo is just waiting to be certified by Palm, RIM, and the carriers.
One huge side note that probably deserves it’s own post is that BlackBerry Connect will run on the Windows Mobile powered Treo 700w as well as Palm OS powered devices. I’ve heard many BlackBerry users (not diehard CrackBerry Addicts) say that they would seriously look at the new Treo 700w if they could get their BlackBerry mail on it. I guess that we may soon see.

Sony Ericsson just announced a 3G tri-band GSM phone that will support BlackBerry Connect. The new Sony Ericsson M600 will be available in both the UK and US sometime in Q2, however, no pricing information is available.
This 15-milimeter-slim, 3G flip-less sibling of the is a dual-mode communicator bringing UMTS and tri-band GSM/GPRS with a touch-sensitve, 2.6-inch 240×320 262K color display, dual-function QWERTY keyboard, RSS reader, and Bluetooth with A2DP stereo audio support for untethered playback of that MP3/AAC audio stored on the 80MB of internal memory or Memory Stick Micro expansion card. And like the P990, the M600 is the second SE phone to feature the Symbian 9.1 OS and UIQ 3.0 interface with support for a wide range of push email for business users including BlackBerry Connect, Seven, Vista, and more.

I was just thinking that I cannot wait for BlackBerry Connect to be offered on a variety of devices in the U.S. Then I thought “Wait a minute!”, I have been waiting for BlackBerry Connect to catch on here for a few years now. It can’t possibly take a company like Research in Motion years to get licensing deals with other manufacturers worked out in the U.S. and nowhere else. Finally I thought, “Does RIM really want Blackberry Connect to take off in the U.S.?”
When take a look at the numbers, Research in Motion makes most of its revenue in the U.S. Even though BlackBerry user subscriptions are going up, RIM still makes the overwhelming majority of it’s profits from BlackBerry handheld sales. That being said, is the real reason that BlackBerry Connect is being adopted at a snail with a bum knee’s pace due to RIM not wanting to share the wealth when it comes to hardware? I am not really sure, however, if this is the case RIM better be careful not to go the way of the Macintosh.
I know that I will get at least 3 emails telling me how great the Mac is and how good Apple is doing right now but if tomorrow all the Macs on earth disappeared, it would be an annoyance. If all the PCs disappeared tomorrow, however, the earth just might stop spinning on it’s axis.
