I just noticed that Vodafone, Optus, and Telstra have released a new version of BlackBerry Connect for the Palm Treo 650 in Austrailia and it just got me to thinking about why BlackBerry Connect is so scarce in the United States.
I understand that Research in Motion still makes dump truck loads of money off of device sales, however, it seems to me that monthly subscriber fees are the key to long term viability for the company as handsets will eventually become commodities.
RIM should take a page from Microsoft and worry not so much about which devices BlackBerry Connect runs on so long as it runs on 87 to 93% of all devices. I know that the carriers play a big role in this and they too should get the ball rolling on making BlackBerry Connect available on more devices.

Remember last Spring, rumors of a new BlackBerry Connect enabled device code named RazrBerry, supposedly from Motorola, acknowledged RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie not to be the Motorola Q? I think his exact words were “Q and RazrBerry are not the same product”. “There are some very core differences.”
It seems like when the Motorola Q and the BlackBerry 8700 started picking up steam all talks about the RazrBerry seemed to die of. This is, in fact, the second time that I have written about what happened to the RazrBerry. I only bring it up because the BlackBerry Rumor Mill seems to be in full swing and the one of the top two guys over at Research in Motion kind of acknowledged its existence.
Has anyone heard anything?

In our excitement over the announcement that a BlackBerry with a camera is coming, we completely overlooked what Research in Motion had to say about BlackBerry Connect here in the United States.
In an eWeek.com interview at the C3 Expo in New York, BlackBerry maker co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that RIM will expand it’s BlackBerry Connect service in the United States. “Twenty non-BlackBerry devices can use the BlackBerry service now,” Balsillie said, adding that 20 more would be able to use it this year.
The hold up on BlackBerry Connect enmasse in the US has been that up until now Blackberry Connect only worked on GSM devices. CDMA still dominates the wireless market in the United States and Balsillie said that focus to this point has been on GSM because “providers want to be able to sell their devices to 200 carriers in 100 countries.”

Earlier today All about Symbian reported that BlackBerry Connect for the Nokia E61 was available for download on the Nokia Business Software site and for a short time it was, however, the download has since been removed.
In the place of the Nokia E61 BlackBerry Connect download is a notice stating that
“The BlackBerry client for Nokia E60, Nokia E61 and Nokia E70 available soon. Please stay tuned.”
My guess is that they found some last minute bugs and had to pull the download from the site….

According to a Reuters report, Nokia, the biggest handset maker in the world, released the Nokia e61 which is designed to compete directly against the BlackBerry.
“First deliveries started late last week. It’s gradually becoming available across the globe,” Pekka Isosomppi, spokesman for Nokia’s Enterprise division, told Reuters.
It will be interesting to see how the eSeries smart phones fair in the wireless email market. These devices not only compete directly against the BlackBerry they will eventually run BlackBerry Connect that will complement the BlackBerry.
