AT&T Gets The BlackBerry Bold First

I don’t think that too many people that follow Research in Motion would be surprised if we told you that AT&T would be the first U.S. based wireless carrier to offer the BlackBerry Bold which was just officially announced earlier today. We can expect to see the Bold ship anywhere from within the next several weeks to, more probably, the next several months.

For me, the book is still out on the BlackBerry Bold. Although I’ve heard that the keyboard may not be quite bad as that found on the BlackBerry 8800 series devices, those keys look awfully crammed together. I cannot wait to here some of the reviews on the BlackBerry Bold keyboard that will come out of WES this week.

Just like we know that AT&T often gets new BlackBerrys first, Verizon usually gets them darn near last. Research in Motion staggers development of CDMA versions of new BlackBerry devices often by as much as a year after their GSM counterparts. We’ve already been asked the question “When will Verizon get the BlackBerry Bold?” at least a dozen times. All that I can say with a fair amount of certainty is that it will be a while.

Windows Live Messenger And HotMail Get Pushed To The BlackBerry

It looks like Research in Motion and Microsoft presenting to us again, for what seems like the 2nd or 3rd time, the idea of native Microsoft Live Services on the BlackBerry. According to a press release just out today, Microsoft Live Messenger and Hotmail both are to receive BlackBerry push support in the not too distant future.

Customers will also be able to seamlessly access their Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger account from their BlackBerry smartphone by simply entering their Windows Live e-mail address and password once.

We’ve listed the features of both Messenger and Hotmail for BlackBerry after the jump…

Is The BlackBerry Bold Announcement Causing RIM’s Stock (RIMM) To Spike?

We learned last week that the Research in Motion was going to unveil their next generation device today. At around midnight this morning, the BlackBerry Bold press release went out and so far today, RIM’s stock price has shot up about 7%.

Not only is the stock price up today, some analysts believe that the BlackBerry Bold will boost quarterly BlackBerry shipments by 400,000 devices.

With the release of the CDMA BlackBerry Curve 8330 last week and the announcement of the BlackBerry Bold this week, it looks as though RIM is going to have one heck of a summer.

$150 Million BlackBerry Partners Fund Announced

Following the lead of the $10 million Android Developer Challenge from Google and the $100 million iFund started by Kleiner Perkins venture capitalist John Doerr, Research in Motion, along with RBC and Thomson Reuters, have ponied up $150 million in venture capital to support the development of the next generation of mobile applications.

I am not going to recite the entire press release because you can just read it here. I do want to add, however, that this is a pretty cool idea and should lead to so very innovative applications for the BlackBerry and other mobile platforms.

This kind of reminds me of the the BlackBerry bounty Alex King set up for getting the BlackBerry 8700 to tether to a Mac but on a much much larger scale. Developers come up with pretty good ideas on their own, but, when you incentivise them with the thought of funding or prize money, the software and applications that they come up with can be quite spectacular.

Since When Did The Verizon BlackBerry Curve Get a Touchscreen?

Just to be clear and to cut down on confusion up front, the Verizon BlackBerry Curve does not have a touch screen. It just appears that the copywriters over in the Verizon marketing department aren’t aware of this fact.

Credit on this find goes to CrackBerry.com reader Will who found this gem right on Verizon’s site. As I write this post the discrepancy is still live, however, we did a full screen grab after the jump assuming that Verizon will eventually correct their mistake.
