BlackBerry Pearl 2 and Palm Gandolf Confirmed By Sprint

June 15, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 24 Comments

According to a Gizmodo insider, both the BlackBerry Pearl 2 and the Palm Gandolf have been confirmed to come out on Sprint.

Sprint?

I have to be honest, I couldn’t tell you if Sprint regularly releases Palm devices on their network first, however, it is rare for a BlackBerry to hit their network before it hits Verizon. What does that say about Verizon? I will leave that question for another post.

Both the BlackBerry Pearl 2 and the Palm Gandolf should hit stores late Summer or early Fall.

I can see the question coming in the comments so I will just answer it now. Would I leave Verizon to get the BlackBerry Pearl 2.

Heeeeeeeeeecks Nooooo!

Mobile BlackBerry Site Gets a Makeover

June 13, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 7 Comments

One website that should be bookmarked in every BlackBerry users BlackBerry Browser, the mobile BlackBerry homepage located at mobile.blackberry.com, appears to have recently undergone a makeover. The new template has a very clean, minimalist feel with excellent uses of white space. The template, however, is not the only thing that changed when the site was updated.

One of the most popular sections of mobile.blackberry.com is the free blackberry games section which, coincidentally, we just talked about the other day. We listed the dozen or so games that were available at the time. The updated site, however, only list 5 games with a notice to check back from time to time as the free BlackBerry games are on a rotation.

Thanks for the heads up about the update Dave…

BlackBerry Pearl 2: Smaller, Lighter, And Takes Better Pictures Than Its Predecessor

June 10, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 19 Comments

Gizmodo has the deets on the BlackBerry Pearl 2 rumored to hit an EV-DO network sometime in Q4.

Other than the high-speed EV-DO network, the BlackBerry Pearl 2 will be nearly 8mm thinner than the BlackBerry Pearl currently available as well as weigh 30% less. The Pearl 2 will also have a 2.0 megapixel digital camera up from 1.3 MP in the current model.

Even with the BlackBerry Curve being out, the BlackBerry Pearl 2 is the ideal device for me as I love the form factor and have been a fan of SureType since day one. I just wish that it wouldn’t take Verizon a year to actually get a version of the Pearl.

Palm Gandolf: Maybe they can compete with this…

June 9, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 5 Comments

Palm has had a rough go it over the passed little bit. There have been numerous rumors about them being bought out. They just recently announced a crippled, Linux running, $599 laptop-like device called the Foleo, a device they are touting as a smartphone companion device. (I am still scratching my head on that one). It is becoming difficult to take Palm seriously any longer.

Just when you think, however, that Palm is about to go the way of the Dodo, they come out with new device that possibly could breath some life into company that used to reign supreme in the PDA world.

The device in question is called the Palm Gandolf that is a very grainy picture of it up top.

Verizon Redefines The Word Unlimited

June 8, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 10 Comments

The word unlimited, according to most dictionaries, is defined as “limitless or having no boundaries”. The definition of unlimited that I really like is “without any qualification or exception”. One might think that if they had an unlimited data plan that they actually would have no cap on the amount of data that they could download. This is why I take exception with Verizon’s absolutely qualified and limited use of the word unlimited when they refer to their 5 gig, err 4 gig cap on data on their unlimited data plan.

Jeffrey Nelson, Verizon Wireless spokesman, said that calling the service, “unlimited” is not misleading. “It’s very clear in all the legal materials we put out,” he said. “It’s unlimited amounts of data for certain types of data,” he said.

To make a long story short, so long as you don’t do any of the things that someone actually wanting an unlimited data plan might do, you should be ok.

More Free Games For Your BlackBerry

June 8, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 21 Comments

Last Fall we created a list of the top 5 free BlackBerry games from Magmic Games and it has become one of the most viewed posts here on RIMarkable. We are often asked what other free BlackBerry games are and the first place I send everyone is mobile.blackberry.com. The mobile BlackBerry help site has a downloads section and under it you will find about a dozen or so free BlackBerry games available every BlackBerry owner.

A little over a year ago we listed all of the free BlackBerry games on the site, however, that list is now out of date so we thought that we should update it.

5 Ways The iPhone Could Hurt Verizon

June 6, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 9 Comments

Surely, by now, you’ve heard about the new iPhone from Apple and AT&T due out June 29th and you may have even seen one of the new iPhone commercials. By all accounts, the iPhone, will be the biggest thing to happen to the U.S. based mobile market ever and many are speculating that the iPhone could change the face of the mobile industry as we know it.

As with new BlackBerry devices, Verizon won’t be seeing the iPhone anytime soon. Delayed release schedules for new BlackBerrys really haven’t adversely affected Verizon up to this point. I, however, am not so sure that this will be the case with iPhone.

Here are my 5 reasons how I think the iPhone could hurt Verizon.

What Would It Take To Get You To Switch To The iPhone?

June 4, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 15 Comments

A friend just asked me an interesting question and I thought that I would pose the question to you. What would it take to get you to switch to the iPhone from your BlackBerry.

I say that this is an interesting question because if it were being asked about any other device I probably would have quickly dismissed the question and said nothing. I, however, thought about this question for a second and shockingly, even come up with a scenario where I would switch.

HP May Revive BlackBerry Printing Platform

June 4, 2007 by Robb Dunewood 2 Comments

At the Print 2.0 conference in New York, Sharon Jones, vice president of laserjet connectivity and document delivery at HP, said that it HP “it may revive its printing platform for BlackBerry handheld devices now that the market has matured”.

Two or three years ago we had a BlackBerry printing platform that we introduced to market. We were a little bit ahead of the market but we feel that it may be time to dust that off and bring it back
